“Anyway, I can see a doctor who does X-rays in house as well as deal with the burn, too?” A compromise of some sort before the big growly bear reappears.
“That I can do. Let me make a phone call. I’m pretty sure you have a scaphoid fracture; it’s the small carpal bone in your wrist, so fine and delicate. It’s pretty easy to break, though usually it’s from a fall.” Vanessa spins into her medical jargon. You can tell she truly loves her job working as a nurse. Plus, this week she’s working nights and willing to stay up when I’m sure she’s dead on her feet.
“Yeah, I guess I was more or less at the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, if only I could get Sylvester to see that. Thank you again, Nessa. I truly appreciate it,” I tell her as she puts the cream on my wrist again. Sly, the ever-present man he is, had it all set up, ready to do it himself in case Vanessa didn’t get here in a timely manner that he’d be happy with.
“You’re welcome. I’m sure you can work your magic with Sylvester. From what Parker told me, you’ve settled something inside of him. All these men have their moments when you’ll want to wring their neck. They mean well, though.” She finishes taking care of my wrists, slips off her gloves, and goes for her phone, hopefully calling the same doctor I saw through a phone call. I really don’t want to reiterate what happened today, and he didn’t question me to death, probably Nessa’s doing. Maybe that will work this time around, too.
“That’s good because I’m pretty sure I’m already more than halfway in love with him,” I admit. Being around him steadily the entire time I’ve been working here at Sterling & Associates, plus this week, it’s an impossible feat not to. Some may say it’s fast, but there’s no timeline on love. My own parents can testify to that, and their marriage is over thirty years strong. The way my father tells the story, he looked at my mom across the college campus. She was sitting with another guy, having a drink, and he watched and waited until he could make his move. The second their date was over, Dad was making his way to Mom, they talked for a few minutes, he asked her out, and they’ve been in love ever since. Dad said it was love at first sight. He knew Mom was going to be the one he married, had children with, and they would grow old together.
“It happens when you least expect it. Parker and I are proof of that,” Nessa says as Parker walks toward her.
“Proof of what?” I watch as he presses a kiss against the side of her head. Neither of us says a word. There are certain instances when these alpha men don’t need to know everything we talk about. “How bad?” I shrug my shoulders, worried to tell Parker before Sly.
“Bad enough that I can’t do anything for her. She’s got an appointment with Dr. Moray in an hour,” Vanessa states. Sylvester appears on my other side. I can see the anger building up inside of him, which is why I hop off the desk, my hand already going to his. We both need to forward our phone calls and emails before we can leave.
“God-fucking-damn it! I’m going to bury him alive for touching you the way he did, and don’t think I won’t.” He nods at Parker, Theo, and Ezra, who joined our little foray.
“Alright, can we wait on the potential of killing someone until later? I realize you’re a big bad attorney and all, but we need to leave.” I take over the conversation before Sylvester starts cussing worse, and believe me, this isn’t his worst yet. I’ve heard him in his office a time or two, along with when I was burnt and when he was pissed with himself, where he’s presently heading toward.
“Yep, let’s go, guys. You all can do your macho talking shit later. The doctor is working her in and doing me a solid. Don’t screw it up by being late.” Her words whip them in to shape. She cleans up her mess, and Sylvester hits a few buttons on his phone on his desk.
“Be right back. Going to forward your calls to the after hours; they can weed through the important ones and send them to my cell.” I’m about to mention we can do it on our way out the door, but the look he gives me says he needs to do it. A moment to regain his composure maybe. Whatever it is, if he can’t work through it, well, I’ll be there to help him along the way.

“Boston’s father, Governor Wescott, has always had it out for his son. At first, it was because he hooked up with Parker and Ezra. The two of them didn’t come from money like Theo and Boston did. Neither of them cared. Wescott did, though. When Boston didn’t follow in his footsteps on the political front, it made for a hostile environment to keep the heat away from Ezra and Millie when she was going through the purchase of her coffee shop. Thankfully, it’s a story that worked out in the end. The son of the previous coffee shop owners was not on the up and up, and it turned out he murdered his parents, tossing Millie into a shit show that Four Brothers and I were able to figure out. Then Wescott announced he was running for president while stating Boston was being cut off from his family,” I tell Fawn the reasoning of why she’s now between a rock and a hard place. Her wrist is, in fact, fractured. The necessity of cast would have been easy if it weren’t for the fact she’s burnt, so it is now in a sling, bandage rewrapped for the third time today. The doctor is hopeful the burn will be better by next week, which is when he’ll X-ray her again to see where we go from there. “Boston was happy about it. His parents aren’t like yours or mine, or Parker and Ezra’s mom. There’s no love lost. That changed when his mom came to my office. You weren’t working here yet. She asked me to look into a few accounts that held Boston’s as well as her money, which Wescott isn’t on, since it’s in an estate of sorts, handed down through generations. I started doing some digging. Wescott showed up on Boston and Amelie’s doorstep—you know she’s pregnant—and we had some words. I did it on purpose to find his trigger. I’m not sure what pissed him off more, the fact that Boston left New York forever, his wife realizing money is pouring out of her bank account when it should be gaining interest, or me opening my mouth, but he decided to retaliate. Unfortunately, I showed my hand. He saw what you mean to me, and now we’re here.” Now Fawn knows everything I do. We’re back at my house, and it’s safe to say the next time we’re out, we’ll be stopping by her place. She’ll be packing a bag and staying here for the foreseeable future.
