“I’m working,” I reiterated, because I did have an earlier shift. Ty poked out his bottom lip, and I bit it, then sucked it into my mouth. God, I wished I wasn’t scheduled. If I hadn’t been, I’d go to Ty’s game, and that was…unnerving. I laughed.

“Um…did I miss something?”

“Unnerving is a funny word.”

Ty’s brows pulled together. “Is it?”

“It is tonight.”

We dissolved into laughter, untangling ourselves from each other, only to lie down together and twine our bodies again. I turned off the lamp.

“I used to go to his games—my high school jock. I’d watch him and be stupidly fucking proud like…like he was mine, this boy everyone wanted, and we had this secret that was just between us. I ignored the girls who were there for him too, the shit-talking from his friends. He liked having me there, said it would make him do better, but I think it was just because he liked having that control over me.”

“That’s not me.” Ty’s breath ghosted against my cheek. “I mean, I like attention, but I’m not him. I want you there because I…fuck, I want to impress you.”

He did, more than he knew. “I know you’re not him.” I danced my fingertips down his face. “I have to work.” It was the only excuse I had, so I’d keep using it.

“Okay.” He pressed a kiss to my lips. “I might become a nurse.”

“You should. Don’t let anyone take that away from you.”

“Next time we fuck, we should play doctor.” More laughter, followed by quiet. “Tell me something nice…about you…your life.”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know. You gotta tell me. I can’t tell you.”

He had a point. My heart beat a little too hard. I took a couple of deep breaths to slow it. “I don’t know… My grandma used to play hide-and-seek with me when I was a kid. It was my favorite game. She was always the best hider, and it would take me forever to find her.”

I felt Ty smile. “She sounds awesome.”

“She’s the best. She used to let me have cereal for dinner too. I fucking love Golden Grahams.”

“Shit, now I want Golden Grahams.”

“Me too.” I was quiet for a moment before admitting, “If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be doing crap with my life. She’s the only person who ever told me I could do something, that I could be different. She wouldn’t lie to me, so I had to believe her, ya know?” Fuck, the weed was giving me loose lips.

“Brax…”

“Don’t get mushy.”

“Don’t tell you that you’re fucking smart and hot and that I believe you can accomplish anything you put your mind to?”

“I guess you can tell me that.”

We laughed, wrestled around together, before I settled on top of him, grinding my groin against his. “Go to nursing school.”

There was a pause, and then a soft, “Okay.”

We kissed lazily for a while, just savoring each other’s mouths, like we didn’t have the munchies for both food and each other.

I didn’t know what time it was when we finally fell asleep, but we did so in each other’s arms.

I was too high and comfortable to let myself worry about it too much.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Ty

I figured I had two choices. Well, make that three. One, I could text Brax and see what he was up to today. Two, I could stop obsessing over the guy and do my own thing or chill with my friends. I hadn’t been spending as much time with them lately. They were always asking what I was up to or who I was fucking, and I still hadn’t told them.

The third possibility was to show up at his house unannounced. Considering this was me, I went with option three. It was the only one that went along with Ty logic when it came to Braxton Walker.

Unfortunately, as soon as I got out of the car, Brax was leaving the house, heading toward his motorcycle, and frowned when he saw me.

“Wow, I’m not used to that look,” I told him.

“I look at you like I don’t know what the fuck you’re doing ninety-five percent of the time.”

“It’s usually mixed with a little more God, I want you, Ty. What did I ever do without you?”

“Lived peacefully.”

“Huh?”

“That’s what I did without you.”

“Ha-ha.”

Brax shuffled his feet, looking slightly unsure, which wasn’t an expression I was familiar with when it came to him. Maybe I shouldn’t have come. Things had been a little different between us Friday night, something I swore not to think about, so I wasn’t going to.

“What are you up to?” he asked. “I’m heading out.”

I shrugged. “Was bored, so I thought I’d see what you were doing. I figured you must be missing me by now.”

I got the reaction I’d been hoping for when Brax chuckled. “It would appear it’s the other way around. You jonesing for my cock, Lacrosse?”
