He patted her tummy and hurried from the room to grab her things. When he returned, she was smiling at him as he dumped her spare clothes on the changing table before bringing her pillow and stuffie. He grabbed a soft pink blanket next and draped it over her.
She grabbed his wrist and pulled him close. “Thank you, Daddy.”
He wasn’t sure what all she was thanking him for, but he suspected it was a lot of things. “I’m so damn glad I met you, Tori. You’re the most perfect Little girl in the world.” He stroked her hair back from her face. “Do you need anything else for your nap?”
She swallowed. “Do you have a binky?”
He smiled, his heart stopping yet again. “I sure do.” He turned to open a drawer on the changing table and grab the unopened package of pacifiers he was now glad he’d ordered with everything else. He hadn’t finished this room by any stretch of the imagination, but he had the staples, and that was all that mattered today.
“Let me guess. You want the pink one?” he teased as he pulled the pink one out of the three-pack.
She giggled. “Yes, Daddy.”
He popped it in her mouth and stroked her back as she rolled awkwardly onto her side and curled up with her binky, her stuffie, and her blanky. She had to bring her top leg up higher than her bottom leg to accommodate the bulk of her diaper, but she managed.
He stood there rubbing her back while she fell into a deep sleep. He remained in that spot for a long time afterward too. He couldn’t stand the idea of leaving her nursery. He wanted to watch her and thank his lucky stars some more.
Finally, he forced himself to walk away, knowing the first thing on his agenda was going to be ordering a monitor for her crib so he could watch her nap in the future and be ready to come get her as soon as she awoke.
He left the door open as he headed for his office. He would have to check on her often, but she was exhausted, so she would undoubtedly sleep for a few hours.
Chapter Ten
Tori slowly woke up, snuggling deeper into her pillow with a slight groan. She didn’t like mornings. She didn’t like to get out of bed. She was warm and cozy and so comfortable, and she remembered she didn’t have to work today.
Wait… She was more than comfortable. Something was different. Her pillow smelled right, but her mattress felt softer and so did her blanket, which seemed to have gotten bunched up between her legs because she couldn’t pull them together.
She opened her eyes and then jerked all the way awake when her gaze landed on some kind of wooden slats. Those were definitely not on her bed.
She bolted upright, her heart pounding. She would have screamed, but something was in her mouth. As she automatically raised her hand to swat the object away from her, things started falling into place in Tori’s mind. She stared at the pacifier that had landed in front of her on the pink blanket.
It wasn’t a dream. She was really here in the nursery that Evan had created. Squirming, Tori realized she needed to potty badly. She tried to figure out a way out of the crib, but the railing wouldn’t budge. He’d warned her not to stand on the mattress. Maybe if she stood on her knees, she could sneak one leg over the barrier and slide to the carpet.
Looking at the open door, she debated between calling for him and trying to fend for herself. Tori didn’t want to bother Evan and it was embarrassing to have to go to the bathroom. He wouldn’t make her use her diaper, would he?
Tori pushed against the padding between her legs and shook her head. No, she couldn’t do that. He wouldn’t want her to make a mess.
Decision made, Tori rose to her knees and wrapped her hands around the top bar. She carefully balanced to keep her weight off her full bladder. Leaning to the side, she slid one ankle over the barrier and pushed off with the other foot to straddle the railing. She was stretched over the length of the wood when she heard a throat clearing from the doorway.
Jerking her head and shoulders up in surprise, Tori pressed her tummy against the hard bar. “No!” she cried as she wet her diaper. Once the urgent flow started, there was nothing she could do to stop it.
Tori allowed herself to roll back into the crib where she pulled the pink blanket over her head in mortification. “Just let me out,” she pleaded.
“Curls, why didn’t you call me?” his gentle voice asked.
She heard the whisper of his footsteps across the carpet as he approached. Tori was so embarrassed. She’d never be able to look at him now.
