It might not hurt to teach him a lesson…

THREE

TORIN

Torin followed Special Agent Sky’lar, trying hard not to watch her lush ass working and full hips swaying under the thin, black mesh bodysuit which was apparently her uniform. She wasn’t at all what he’d expected when Captain Thal’nx had told him he was going to be working with one of his “own kind.” He’d imagined another Mammalian humanoid—not an actual Kindred. And especially not a Kindred female—but that must be what Agent Sky’lar was—his nose didn’t lie to him. She had the scent of his kind—most specifically the scent of a Blood Kindred.

Even more surprising were her teeth—or should he say fangs. He’d seen the small, sharp white points where most humanoids had their canine teeth when she spoke—though he was ashamed to admit he hadn’t noticed them at once. Possibly because the black mesh bodysuit that served as her uniform was mostly see-though and her curvy figure—like an overfull hourglass—was completely on display. The tight points of her large nipples were especially prominent, nearly poking through the mesh in a way that was fucking distracting!

The uniform wasn’t a problem when worn by the Serpentines—or “snake-heads” as they were often called. As the name implied, they were humanoids with long, slender bodies and heads like snakes or serpents. The females also sported long, curving fangs that reminded Torin of the venomous serpents on R’gen Nine.

What the female Serpentines didn’t have were breasts or curves to show through the black mesh uniforms all the Peace Keepers wore. Their tall, slender bodies were nearly sexless—if Torin hadn’t known better, he might have mistaken them for males and thought that the males were actually the females.

He told himself that he had to get rid of preconceived notions. Just because most humanoid species in the galaxy had males that were larger than their females, it didn’t mean that all of them did. With the Serpentines, it was flipped with the females being the larger and more dominant. The few males he’d met were smaller and—for the most part—softer-spoken.

Unfortunately, it seemed his new “partner” equated him with the Serpentine males and thought he was going to be meek and mild. Torin wasn’t an asshole—he wasn’t trying to take her case from her. But it was vital that he get some information on this killer—fast. There were some very disturbing theories as to who he might be which needed to be either confirmed or refuted.

Commander Sylvan, the Head of the Kindred High Council, was especially anxious to find out what was going on. He had appointed every one of the ambassadors who had been killed to their posts, so of course he felt personally responsible…

“…a meem, all right?”

“Huh?” Torin asked, blinking. He realized he’d been following Special Agent Sky’lar while lost in thought, without looking where he was going—possibly because her lush curves were so damn mesmerizing.

“I said I need to check out some weapons—it will only take a meem,” she repeated, sounding impatient. “Were you listening at all?”

“Oh, yes—of course.” Torin cleared his throat. “Just…reviewing the facts of the case in my head—that’s all.”

“Right.” She gave him a skeptical look and then moved to a counter near the back of the room. There was a no-nonsense looking Serpentine female standing behind the counter and she greeted Special Agent Sky’lar by name.

“Officer Sky’lar! What can I get for you today?” she asked, nodding her sleek, hairless head. She was tall—but not as tall as Torin’s new partner, who was by far the tallest person in the Peace Keeping station—besides himself of course.

His extra height was due to the Giant Kindred blood in his DNA. He was a Hybrid—half Beast Kindred and half Giant Kindred, which meant he was around eight feet tall and he estimated his new partner was more like six and a half feet. He liked that she was built on a larger scale than most females he encountered—especially the ones from Earth which were so tiny he was afraid he might break them if he dared to even touch one.

Not that it would do him any good to be touching any kind of female—as a Hybrid, he couldn’t form a Soul Bond. It was one reason he’d chosen to go into service in the Kindred Elite Espionage Corps. He had training as a diplomat, a spy and as an assassin, not to mention having special knowledge of forensics.

As the only operative with all of those qualifications, he was the natural choice to work this case—which made it extra frustrating to be denied access to the evidence and crime scenes on both of the planets where the killer had previously struck.

Well, I’m getting access to this one, Goddess damn it, he thought, watching as his new partner picked out her weaponry from a rack the snake-headed attendant had rolled over for her to choose from. She might not like it, but I’m going to stick to her like fucking glue until I get everything I need.
