But so far, they hadn’t seen a single other Mammalian—let alone one with a white face and black eyes and lips. The bastard ought to stand out in a crowd but they hadn’t caught even a glimpse of him, Torin thought with frustration.

“We will enter and ascend the ramp upwards and stand on the observation deck,” Neen’ya told them. “You must be very quiet while inside the Sacred Chamber. We do not wish to disturb those couples who are honoring the Mother of all Serpents.”

“So there’s more than one couple in there at a time?” Torin asked, frowning. “What about privacy?”

“You’ll see—there is ample privacy for all. Though we Serpentines do not consider copulation to be a private or shameful act,” the acolyte told him. “Unlike you Mammalians, who always seem to want to hide your copulation away from all eyes.”

“We just like our privacy, that’s all,” Torin muttered. He wondered if Serpentine couples fucked publicly in the street or something like that—it would be a question to ask Sky’lar when they were alone together, he decided.

The acolyte pushed very lightly on one of the vast stone panels, which rose several stories above their heads. At once, both of the enormous stone doors swung silently open, revealing a vast chamber almost as big as the entrance hall of the Shrine. There was a ramp going in both directions—down to the floor and up to the observation deck. The three of them climbed upwards.

The first thing Torin saw when they were settled on the narrow deck, was an enormous statue of the Mother of all Serpents. It was so big that one of the statue’s stone toes would be bigger than he was, he estimated. The Serpentine Goddess was dressed in a simple robe and her face was serene as she stared down at her feet.

Torin could see why the sculptor who had carved the statue would make her looking down. The couples who were honoring her were arranged at regular intervals around her massive stone feet. He counted five different couples around her left foot and six around her right. All of the couples were separated by a type of wooden lattice which seemed to grow naturally at intervals around the statue’s base and all of them were going at it. Faint grunts and groans of pleasure rose up to meet them as the couples worshipped their goddess.

Most of the couples were Serpentine and it seemed that almost all of them were having sex for procreation, Torin thought. He recognized the Serpentine pair that had been in the number room with them. The female had removed her robe so that she was fully naked. She was leaning, face-first, against the wooden lattice which seemed to slant slightly to support her weight.

She had the lattice gripped in both hands and was moaning as her much smaller husband mounted her from behind, driving his finger-sized dick into her scaly vaginal slit.

Then Torin saw something which made his heart skip a beat. One of the Serpentine couples was reversed—it was the male clinging to the wooden lattice while his wife stood behind him and filled him with a phallus which was fastened to her scaly hips with straps. He was moaning every bit as loudly as any of the females being penetrated and in fact, he seemed to be enjoying himself, Torin thought. Could a male actually find penetration enjoyable? Before this mission, it was not a question he’d ever had to ask himself.

“As you can see, all of our couples here are honoring the Great Serpent Mother either by procreation or by pleasure,” Neen’ya s said, breaking into his musings. “I understand that it is uncertain which method you two will use during your own sexual sacrifice.”

“It…depends on if my body releases an egg for fertilization or not,” Sky said in a low voice.

“Actually, I have a question about that,” Torin said. “How do we know? I mean, how do we know if, uh, Agent Sky’lar is, um, ovulating or not?” It was an awkward question and not one he’d ever had to ask a female before.

“Oh, the Priestess on duty will be able to tell using this.” The acolyte pulled the thumb-sized crystal she was wearing from around her neck and waved it over Sky’lar’s lower abdomen, which was exposed by the robe she wore.

Torin watched the crystal go from pale blue to white with just a hint of yellow and Sky’lar watched too, her face unreadable.

After a moment, the acolyte shook her head and put the crystal back around her neck.

“No—not yet,” she said to Sky’lar. “If your body had released an egg, my Crystal of Discernment would have turned pink. It’s yellowish, which means you’ll release one soon. But until it’s bright pink, you’re not ovulating yet. Of course, if the crystal turns purple after your procreation, that means it was a successful mating and that your egg has been fertilized.”
