“Slippery?”

He nods while swallowing. “One day I was your boyfriend. The next day I wasn’t. The second I got another girlfriend, you stalked me, tempted me, pissed off every other girlfriend I attempted to have. You said jump. I asked how high?”

“I never said jump.”

His hands slide along my bare legs, just under my nightie, thumbs teasing my inner thighs. “It was a look you gave me. I think it was even the very first look you gave me. It said jump, and I was a goner. Did you not see the way I looked at you? Every fucking look asked ‘how high?’ It still does. I don’t think it’s physically possible for me to walk this earth without gravitating toward you.”

Seventeen years … and not a day’s passed that I haven’t thought about Colten, not a day that my thoughts haven’t gravitated to my memories of him.

That smile, the one hijacking his lips and gleaming in his eyes … it’s everything. He leans in a few inches from my lips. “Every woman who has asked me if I loved her has received an extended pause for an answer. As long as there is a Josephine Watts walking this earth, I am incapable of loving another woman.” He tips his chin and rests his forehead on my collarbone. “You’re it. Always have been. Always will be.”

“I’ll marry you,” I whisper.

Colten lifts his head slowly, confusion etched into his face. “What?”

I shrug a shoulder. “I’ll marry you, if … you take me to Tennessee.”

The confusion deepens. “What’s in Tennessee?”

“Sightseeing.”

He searches my eyes for a few breaths before grinning. “I’ll take you anywhere.”

I can’t help but mirror his smile. I’ve loved this boy nearly my whole life.

Colten’s lips press to mine. It’s slow—lazy Saturday slow. I know he needs to go into work, but he doesn’t seem to be in a rush.

Did I really just agree to marry him?

His words have always played me with the ease his fingers drift along ivory keys. He effortlessly makes me want him … need him.

Ghosting his lips from my mouth to my ear, eliciting a flurry of goose bumps along my skin, he whispers, “How are you feeling this morning?”

“G-good …” My fingers tease the nape of his neck while my tongue fumbles my words. My heart works a little harder to accommodate all the sensations Colten elicits.

“Want to feel even better?” He sucks the skin below my ear, his hand inching between my legs.

No panties.

Nothing to slow him down.

His finger makes an easy swipe, stopping at my clit, circling, torturing.

I swallow the pooling saliva in my mouth before I end up drooling all over him. My legs spread another inch. He grins just before kissing me again.

The soft satin of my nighty teases my hard nipples, and all I want is to feel his naked body pressed to mine.

He slips two fingers inside of me, fucking me with his hand between my legs and his tongue in my mouth.

My fingers dig into his back as he stands, hunched over me.

Kissing me.

Fingering me.

Rubbing the heel of his hand against my clit while his other hand cups the back of my head, deepening the kiss.

A tiny tug grips my abdominal muscles, but I can’t register any discomfort because all I feel is the build up to my orgasm.

Col-colten … Colten … oh god …

He stills his hand and slows the kiss while my body stiffens for a few seconds before melting into a limp state. It pulls a grin from him against my mouth. Of course, he’s proud. In a matter of minutes, he’s expertly manipulated my mind and my body. Josephine Watts’s puppeteer.

Now who’s the one asking how high without saying the actual words?

But just to make sure, I frame his face with my hands. “Do you love me, Colten?” I selfishly want one last confirmation. I want what he couldn’t give any other woman.

“Yes,” he says without hesitation. A wide grin acting as an exclamation point.

I tingle from the aftereffects of the orgasm and reality sinking into my conscience. Emotions burn my eyes, but I keep them in check. “I love you too,” I whisper, dragging the pad of my thumb over his lip before kissing him again.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

Colten goes into work for a few hours while I do more research. I suppose I should call a bunch of people to tell them I’m engaged, but I really don’t care if I’m married to Colten. It’s for him, not me.

I won’t take his last name.

I won’t give him more babies.

I won’t do his laundry.

He gets a piece of paper that says I’m legally his wife.

And I get to go to Tennessee with him.

It’s a fair exchange.

I do more research on Winston Jeffries, but I can’t find anywhere that says the bodies were found.

They’re in the cemeteries.
