He narrows his eyes.

My grin swells while said hand slides beneath the sheets and grips his erection, slowly stroking him.

He groans, eyes drifting shut, lips parting for a few breaths. “You’re right. That definitely warrants breaking into my house.”

I grin while kissing his bare chest. His hands tangle in my hair softly before clenching it and tipping my head back to kiss me with vigor.

It’s a good kiss. Hard but slow like every move we make. We’re a tight band of need yet controlled. Unhurried.

Colten releases my hair to unhook my bra. Then he pulls me on top of him, flinging my bra to the side while I kiss my way up his neck. He fists the backside of my panties and gruffly peels them from my body.

Everything is new but familiar.

He rocks his hips and pushes into me sitting astride him. His hands grip my hips to guide me at his pace.

“Touch yourself, Josie.”

I open my eyes to his intense gaze and cup my breasts. He rocks his pelvis harder into me. The muscles in his jaw flex for a moment. His right hand releases my hip, clutching my wrist to pull my hand from my breast to his mouth. Like a lion savoring its prey, he licks my fingers several times. Then he guides my hand to my clit.

I touch myself for him. Desire builds in his eyes while his tongue makes a slow swipe along his lips, and his gaze affixes to my hand.

“You’re the most exquisite human I have ever known,” he rasps.

We spend the early morning hours lost in the sheets. I haven’t been looking for a warm body; I’ve been looking for his warm body.

Spooning naked with tangled legs and woven arms while he hugs me to him, he kisses the back of my shoulder. “Tell me about your first time.”

I giggle. “I’m not telling you about my first time while we’re like this.”

“Fine. Tell me about your second time. Was it me a few weeks ago?”

“Mosley, you do realize I’m an expert in death. I know ten different ways to kill you that would look like an accident or suicide.”

He squeezes my breast that’s been cupped in his hand like a security blanket since we assumed this position. “I’m just going to stick with my original belief.”

“And what was that?”

“That you kept your virginity for me.”

“Sure. That’s why you saw a guy leaving my place in the morning when you surprised me by bringing your mom for a visit. What do you think I did with that guy all night?”

“He looked like the loser kind who has a foot fetish. I assumed you slept, and he snuck photos of your feet. They’re probably all over the internet, and now hundreds of thousands of guys jerk off to your feet.”

I wriggle my body around to face him, giving him the hairy eyeball.

His breast hand becomes an ass-squeezing hand as he pulls me closer. “I’m good to go again.” He grins while his erection slides along my belly.

“Tough luck, Mr. Duck. I’m hungry.”

His grin doubles. “That works too.”

“Solid food.” I roll my eyes.

“It’s pretty solid.”

“Colten.”

“Josie,” he mimics in a high-pitched voice.

We’re nine years old all over again.

“Donuts?” he asks.

“Tell me you work in law enforcement without actually telling me you work in law enforcement.” I laugh.

Colten rubs his lips together to hide his grin for a few seconds. He’s irresistibly sexy with his dark, whiskery face and messy hair this morning. “The donuts are for you.”

“You don’t eat donuts?”

He moves his shoulders in a weird shrug. “I was planning on eating you while you eat a donut.”

Damn, he’s good.

I don’t even try to hide my grin. “Donuts work for me.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Seventeen years.

I honestly started to think I’d never see Josephine Watts again. Here she is, back in my life, making a mess of her cinnamon and sugar donut while I sit across from her at a round table, sipping coffee.

It really is a goddamn miracle.

She licks her lips, glancing at another couple coming into the donut shop. I could stare at Josephine Watts all day. I still can’t believe she’s back in my life.

“I think you’re the biggest disappointment of my life,” she says as whimsically as one might say while suggesting a movie.

I study her for a second from behind my cup of coffee, waiting for her to elaborate.

She doesn’t.

“That’s not exactly something a guy likes to hear after he drops seven dollars and fifty cents on coffee and a donut for a girl.”

Josie blows the steam from her coffee and grins. “Let me elaborate.”

“Please. I’d love to know where this is going.”

“I’ve always been logical. Curious. Scientifically minded. I operate on facts. I easily detach from things, which is why I’m so good at my job.”

“Wow, don’t be so modest.”

She chuckles. “I didn’t say I’m the best, but I’m good at it. I imagine you’re good at your job too. You’ve never done anything half-assed that I can remember.”
