The raw, natural feel of the place was what I love the most and the floor-to-ceiling windows on the east side allowed for mornings lying in bed with Kai’s arms around me and watching the sunrise.

Walking across the hardwood floors, I made my way to the bedroom. Kai’s keys had been on the glass table so I knew he was back early and I was excited to see him. But then I was always excited to see him.

Kai was my other half. My always. And sometimes it scared me how much I loved him because it consumed me. He consumed me.

Standing in the doorway of our bedroom, I watched Kai as he hung up his suit jacket in the walk-in closet.

Every muscle rippled as he moved and I squeezed my thighs together. I’d never get tired of watching Kai. There was so much beauty in him and it wasn’t just because of his hard contoured body; it was how he moved.

Smooth and agile, combined with a fierce confidence. I’d never known anyone to be so confident with who he was other than Kai.

“I love you watching me, braveheart.” He slowly turned, eyes blazing with desire. “It’s a total turn-on, but I’ve been away for two days without the touch of your lips on mine and I’d rather them on me than across the room.”

“Did business go okay?” I was about to break some rather shocking news and if ‘business’ was a success then this would be much easier… on him.

His eyes narrowed and his back stiffened. Shit, how did he know something was up? God, he was so in tune to me. The only way I’d been able to hold this off for so long was because it was almost impossible for me to get pregnant.

Almost.

“What’s wrong?” he asked carefully.

As he strode across the bedroom toward me, he pulled his leather belt from the loops of his pants. I smiled thinking of that night in my loft when we first met and I thought he was going to spank me with his belt.

“How do you know something’s wrong?”

He tossed the belt on the bed then stopped in front of me. With his knuckles, he caressed the side of my face and I tilted my head, leaning into his touch. “You’d never ask me that first. You’d ask if I was okay.” Shit, true. “I’ll ask you again, what’s wrong?”

There was no way to ease him into this and Kai liked straight forward, so I bit the bullet. “I’m three months’ pregnant.”

He jerked, eyes widening, hand dropping from my face and mouth gaping.

Yep, total shock. I let him process the words and everything that came with them, which was a hell of a lot, and waited patiently for him to say something.

And it was a while because he slammed his mouth shut then walked back to the closet and finished undressing out of his suit, and then slowly pulled on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

I moved into the bedroom and sat on the end of the bed, my eyes never leaving him. This was Kai losing his cool silently. He was freaked and didn’t trust himself to say or do anything until he pulled it together.

He walked out of the closet, briefly glanced at me and said, “A doctor confirmed this?”

“Yes.”

He nodded then walked out of the bedroom. Hmmm, I wasn’t sure what to do, so I went with instinct and followed him. The fridge opened and closed as he took out a bottle of water and cracked the seal before chugging it back.

I stood twenty feet away. Shit, did he think I cheated? I’d been really confident that he’d never consider that a possibility, but suddenly I wasn’t so sure.

I wrung my hands together and stared at the floor as my mind panicked with all kinds of stupid things like if he’d leave me.

Suddenly he was in front of me, his hands cupping either side of my head and tilting it so I met his intense gaze.

“I see what’s going through your head. Don’t even go there. I’m not thinking it. I know it has to be mine.” A wave of relief settled over me. “That’s why you were sick.” It wasn’t a question. He’d been quiet because he was calculating and trying to figure it all out. “Why you asked me about getting a pet?”

I nodded.

His eyes narrowed. “You knew back then?”

“Not for sure. The test at the store said yes, but the possibility was so unlikely that I didn’t believe it until the doctor did a few tests and explained to me that there is a possibility, rare but it happens.”

What I wanted to hear was what he thought about having a child. We’d never considered it, and Kai had made it clear he wasn’t into sharing me even with a pet.
