I turned and Sunshine came over to set down a single wildflower we’d picked from our ranch. She said something in Cherokee that calmed my spirit. I threaded my hand with hers as we stood for another second.
“I’m grateful for the man you raised. I wish we’d met in life. But one day, we shall meet,” Sunshine said, squeezing my hand.

I must have stood in the bathroom for what felt like hours as I stared at the two lines. I was pregnant. The news couldn’t have come at a more inconvenient time.
Mitchell had been pacing the halls as we all waited in anticipation for what was coming. Zoe did not know either, as I turned to vomit yet again this morning. I’d been right. The signs had only gotten more prominent as the days had gone by. But this morning, I’d been in the bathroom puking up my breakfast.
It wasn’t time to tell Mitchell. He had so much on his plate. I’d just finished rinsing my mouth and face when I heard the doorbell.
Mitchell called, “Zoe, someone’s at the door for you.”
I made my way to the stairs. Everything was changing. James had decided to move into town with his friend. That had come as a shock to us all. We hadn’t even met her when he’d sprung the news on us.
Mitchell was hiring someone to build us a house on the property nearest the mountains. It would be closer to Mountainside and the mountain I owned. Of course, he was building a barn for my mustangs. The paperwork had come in.
James was giving the house to Nate, since Mitchell wanted us to live closer to the mountains. He knew it would make me happy, and I loved him even more for that.
But the biggest change was the person behind the door. I loved Zoe like a daughter and if things didn’t go right, I didn’t know how I’d fit into her life.
I took Mitchell’s hand just as Zoe opened the door and I held my breath.
