“Here you are,” she says, her voice a little husky. “And here I am. The question is, where will we be after this?”

Chapter Sixteen

Kylie

I’ve done the math. It’s been eight years and two months since I last had sex. Eric had been deployed for four months when he was injured, and I never considered being with anyone else until Pax.

And now, I’m about to jump him in his car on the drive to his house. What is it about a man being vulnerable that’s so unbelievably sexy? Especially this giant of a man who knocks hockey players around for a living. Pax isn’t rough around the edges like I initially thought, but he is a closed book. He keeps his secrets buried and only shows the world his carefree, easygoing side. Now that he showed me the pain that lies beneath the surface, I can’t hold back from him anymore.

“This is it,” he says, pushing a button on his car’s console to open the garage door.

It’s a single-story Spanish-style house with a two-car garage and a small covered front porch. It’s not lavish, but the lawn and landscaping are neatly kept.

“Bought it because it’s close to the arena,” he says, shrugging.

“I like it.”

“Thanks.”

We both open our doors and get out, and I’m trying to calm my racing heart when Pax backs me up to the closed door of his vehicle, a predatory gleam in his eye.

“Let me open doors for you,” he says, caging me in with his hands pressed to the car on either side of my shoulders. “You spend so much time taking care of other people, I want to be the one to take care of you.”

My pulse pounds even harder as he lowers his forehead to rest against mine, leaning closer. His solid, warm presence makes me forget…everything. Who am I again? What did he just ask me? Whatever it was, there’s only one word I want to say to him.

“Yes,” I say, biting my lower lip.

“I like the sound of you saying yes, baby. Now I need to find out what it sounds like when you put my name after it.”

He presses his mouth to mine in a kiss, and I put my hands on his waist as I kiss him back, my fingers not finding much to sink into.

Jesus. He’s all muscle. Entirely hard. Especially—

“Oh my god.” I pull away from the kiss, my eyes widening from what feels like a steel baseball bat being pressed into my stomach. “Is that…? I mean, shit.”

“What, baby?” His brows knit together in concern.

“I haven’t had sex in more than nine years. You’re going to tear me in half with that thing.”

He kisses my forehead, humming his amusement. “I promise I won’t. We’ll take things slow.”

“Can I just…?” I move my hand higher, checking the size of his erection. “Oh my god, that’s abnormal. It’s the size of my forearm.”

“Not quite.” He kisses me, softly this time. “If you’re not ready”

“I’m ready. I just don’t want you to be disappointed.”

His mouth trails from my lips to my jawline, then to my earlobe, where his nibble makes me break out in goose bumps.

“You could never disappoint me. All I want is to make you feel good, baby. That’s my fantasy.”

He takes my hand and leads the way into the house, then through a darkened mudroom and kitchen, which from what I can see, is clean and modern. My pulse races so hard I’m light-headed. I know this is right, but it’s also terrifying. I’d hoped to one day find a kind, good man to be with. I found so much more than that in Pax.

We’ve almost made it through the kitchen when he stops and turns, wrapping me in his arms and devouring my mouth with his. A little moan escapes my lips when he grabs my ass, and he makes a groaning sound of his own in response, bending and picking me up.

My legs wrap around his waist like they were made to be there. Being encased in his powerful arms is heaven; nothing else can touch me. He slowly makes his way through a large room and into a hallway, and my body continues calling its own shots, my hips working up and down to grind my core against his thick erection.

He may kill me with it, but what a way to go.

“The…” he pulls his mouth from mine, moving a hand up to cradle the back of my head. “The door is close. I don’t want to hit your head if I miss it.”

I laugh and kiss the end of his nose, so turned on I can’t think straight but also incredibly happy. It’s been so long since I’ve been touched. Cherished. Wanted.

“Here it is,” Pax says, walking into what must be his bedroom and carrying me over to the bed, where he lays me down and looks at me, reverence coating his expression in the dim light.
