“Yeah, some guys stabbed him up in the showers,” I reply.

“He had a little brother who was always at the races. Zander or something like that,” Skittles adds. “I always got the feeling he didn’t like Lex much, so I kept an eye on him when he was around.”

“Was he there that night?”

“I think he was. I remember seeing him talking to a few people, but it’s been so long I couldn’t tell you who.”

I pull out my phone and start dialing as Pit does the same. “Who are you guys calling?”

“Rome,” we say at the same time.

I nod and hang up. We have the same idea. I want to know where this Zander has been for the past thirteen years. I have a sinking feeling he was once an acquaintance of Thaddeus Pitman.

My phone rings in my hand. Not knowing the number, I pick up right away. It could be Lex calling from the hospital with news.

“Hello.”

“I have something that belongs to you. Well, she once belonged to my brother. So I now have your sloppy seconds.

“If you want your wife back in one piece, bring me two million. Your family is good for it. No cops, no bullshit. If I so much as feel something is off, I’m pulling the trigger.”

With that, the son of a bitch hangs up. The line goes dead in my ear. As I pull the phone away, it alerts me with a text.

When I open it, it’s an address. I’m in motion before I can think. My blood is boiling with that old rage. That shit that fuels the enforcer within.

“Ox, Ox, what just happened?” Skittles calls after me.

“Zander has Lex. Don’t follow me. He’s going to die.”

“She’s not coming, but I am,” Pit calls.

“If you can keep up.”

I grab my gun holster and two guns from the front closet, where I keep a hidden case. I tug the holster on and head out to my bike. Throwing my helmet on, I kick a leg over my bike and start it.

I rev the engine as I seethe. Smoke billows up behind me. I glance up and see Pit mount Lex’s new bike while texting on his phone before I tear out of the garage headed for my wife.

This motherfucker picked the wrong man. I never break my promises to Lex and when I promised her I’d come for her if she ever needed me, I meant that shit.

Chapter 54

Knight to The Rescue

Alexis

Oh boy, I can’t wait for Ant to get here. This idiot won’t shut the fuck up. As if that isn’t enough to annoy me, my feet are killing me. I mean, who kidnaps someone and doesn’t have a place to take the kidnappee?

We’re standing out here in the middle of a big-ass empty parking lot, for crying out loud. I have a mind to kick him in the nuts and make a run for it, but I’m not putting my life in danger for this asshole.

Ant will get his ass when he gets here. Suddenly, I pick up on the distinct sound of two bikes racing our way. My heart starts to pound.

This will be over soon. As soon as I have the thought, more engines sound, not bikes though. Three race cars come into view, racing right for us. They’re three of the cars from the night they brought me home.

“Here comes my money,” Zander croons.

“Here comes the coroner, asshole,” I mutter, but the loud snarl of the car engines covers my words.

A huge grin comes to my face as they all begin to drift around us. I cover my ears and watch as smoke starts to rise from the trees, filling the air and becoming almost blinding. Then I hear it above all the growling of the car engines and loud tailpipes. The sound of a motorcycle.

I look up in time to see the bike zip up over one of the cars into the air like a springboard. It’s like it happens in slow motion. I move out of the way as Zander starts to freak out behind me.

“No, no, no, no,” he says like a scared little bitch.

I watch as the rider releases the handlebars, pulls two guns, holds out both arms and aims at Zander. Gunshots fill the air. By the time I spin my entire body to watch the rider land, Zander is lying on the ground, lifeless.

Ant lands with a bounce and turns back toward me. I know it’s my husband because I know his big body. I also know how he rides. We used to ride together all the time. The cars all stop and rev their engines.

“I knew you would come,” I sing as Ant stops the bike, tugs his helmet off, and grabs me to kiss the shit out of me.

“I love you. There was never a question of if I was coming,” he says against my lips and kisses me again.
