“I felt too much for you,” I whispered, staring at his shoes, not able to meet his eyes. If I didn’t go cold turkey on him, I would have never been able to let him go long enough to leave.
“And you think I wouldn’t have returned those fucking feelings, West?” he demanded. I jerked my eyes up to his in shock. “Well, guess what, sweetheart?” He sneered, bending his knees so that he was looking me in the eyes. “Now it’s too goddamn late. You fucking ruined everything,” he snarled as he yanked my heart out of my chest and ripped it apart in his hands.
I blinked back tears at his harsh words—harsh words that I knew I deserved—but knowing that didn’t make his words hurt any less.
He stepped back from me. “Get in the car. I’ll take you to your mom’s place, and I’ll get someone to come tow your truck to the shop,” he told me, his voice suddenly cold and void of emotion.
I’d rather he be angry with me.
“I don’t need help,” I grumbled, bristling at his tone of voice. I could deal with him shouting at me, but this? I couldn’t deal with Jessie when he was like this—cold and empty toward me.
He turned his angry eyes back to me, making me flinch back from him. “Get in the fucking car, West.”
Knowing better than to argue with him at that moment, I silently grabbed my purse and phone out of the truck and slid into Jessie’s car, quietly shutting his car door behind me. The ride back to the town was tense and deadly silent. I was itching for a fucking cigarette, but I was also too afraid to move to roll his window down to smoke.
When he pulled up to my mom’s, I slid out of his car without a word, crossing my arms over my chest as I silently walked up the driveway to the front door, listening to his car as he drove away.
But I didn’t dare turn around.

West
I cursed as I searched everywhere for my fucking mother’s car keys. Honestly, why was it so fucking hard to find the damn keys? Fuck the truck. I needed to get the hell out of this damn town. That truck could sit there, rot, get sold—I frankly did not give a fuck. I had to get the hell out of here.
“Finally!” I shouted as I found the keys buried in the couch cushions.
I walked out of the front door, shutting it and locking it behind me. Didn’t know why I bothered. This place could burn to the fucking ground for all the fucks I gave.
I beeped the Camaro unlocked and slid into the driver’s seat, turning the car over.
Nothing.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” I snarled as I tried again, but nope. Nothing.
I slid out of the car and stormed around to the hood, lifting it and glaring at the engine. “Missing something?” Jessie’s deep, familiar voice asked as he came around the car to where I could see him.
And he was holding the fucking spark plugs—all of them. Right there in his fucking palm.
“You’re way too predictable, West,” he remarked, but there wasn’t even a smirk on his lips. It had my blood running cold. I was in no condition mentally to be dealing with him. “I’m not letting you leave town so easily this time. Let’s go get breakfast.”
I threw my hands up in the air in exasperation. “Why can’t I fucking leave?” I demanded angrily. “I don’t want to fucking be here, Jessie.”
He shrugged. “Tough,” he said, not seeming to care about my distress as he once had. “Let’s go.”
“I’m not fucking going anywhere with you,” I snarled as I slammed the hood down and stormed back toward the house. Jessie could go fuck himself.
“West,” he quietly warned from behind me. I knew that tone of voice meant to get my ass back down the porch and go get breakfast with him if I didn’t want him to blow his shit, but I frankly didn’t care.
“Go fuck yourself, Jessie,” I snapped as I opened the front door and slammed it shut behind me with a resounding slam.
I threw the keys onto the kitchen counter. I shrieked when the front door slammed open, crashing against the wall before slamming shut again. Jessie’s tall, muscular frame towered over me. I swallowed past a sudden lump in my throat, my eyes running over his rugged features. He had a five o’clock shadow on his face, and his eyes were swirling with a bunch of different emotions as he glared down at me.
“Don’t try me, West,” he warned quietly.
“Stop being such a fucking asshole then, Jessie,” I mocked.
He gripped my hair and yanked my head back so that my neck was exposed, putting me in a vulnerable position. I swallowed though it was hard at the angle my neck was in, fear making my heart thump hard in my chest. “Jessie,” I whimpered as I reached up to grip his biceps, fear clawing at my gut.
