I moan. “Oh...” I twist to get away from his onslaught.

He was going to come and he didn’t want to before me. He wants to make sure I come, too. He’s always the perfect lover.

Every single time.

This is too intimate, too real, too perfect.

I’m going to come.

“Nathan!” I cry. “Get back on top of me. Now!”

He slides in deep again, and I moan as I clench down hard and come in a rush.

Nathan’s eyes roll back in his head as he watches me, and he lets loose with deep, hard pumps. The bed begins to hit the wall with force. The sound of our skin slapping echoes throughout the room.

His moan is deep and guttural, and he holds himself deep as he comes in a rush.

We move together slowly to completely empty his body into mine, and then he falls onto his elbows and kisses me tenderly. We smile against each other’s lips.

My man is home.

I wake hours later in a state of exhaustion. Nathan and I have been at it for hours, until we couldn’t physically do it anymore. We fell asleep in each other’s arms in a state of bliss. I lean up onto my elbows. It’s dark, and Nathan is now out of bed and dressing.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“I’ve got to go.”

I frown. It’s still dark out. “What, why?”

“I’m on an early flight.”

“Oh.” My heart sinks. “Okay.”

He sits on the side of the bed and smiles as he brushes the hair back from my forehead. “You were incredible.”

I smile goofily at him.

“We should do it again sometime.”

What?

My dream instantly dissipates.

Oh, the casual thing. He’s playing the game. Of course he is.

I roll my lips to try to hide my smile. “Yeah, I’ll think about it,” I reply casually.

He stands in a rush, annoyed by my answer.

I roll over onto my side and put my back to him. “Can you lock the door on your way out, baby?” I scrunch my face into my pillow, knowing full well that he will be going postal on the inside.

“I’m going,” he says.

“Yeah, I know.” I smile into my pillow. He wants me to demand that we get back together. Well, too bad, I’m not. I wasn’t joking the other day, being a bitch really is fun.

“Don’t call me, I’ll call you.” He huffs.

“I wasn’t going to. Have a safe flight,” I say casually.

He hesitates, and I know he wants to lose his shit. “I’m going,” he repeats.

“Yeah, okay. God, I’m trying to sleep here, Nathan.”

He inhales sharply, and he marches out the door. It slams behind him.

I roll onto my back and smile goofily at the ceiling. Holy shit.

Who am I?

I empty the last of the boxes and look around my little apartment. I love it.

It feels like home already. I flew in last Sunday and have spent the week unpacking and settling in. I rejoined my old gym and caught up with my friends. I start work on Wednesday.

It’s Sunday night, and I haven’t heard from Nathan all week. I wanted to get settled and not call him the minute I landed in San Francisco. I need to be independent and, damn it, I’m going to try my hardest to do it.

I do really want to see him, though. He’s all I can think about, and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve nearly called him. I told myself all week that if I hadn’t heard from him by Sunday, I can call him. Tonight is the night.

My phone dances across my coffee table, and the name Phyllis lights up the screen.

Nathan’s mom. “Hello,” I answer.

“Hello, darling, how is my favorite girl settling in?”

“I’m great. Feels good to be back home.” I look around at my surroundings. “My apartment is so cute. Wait till you see it.”

“Have you started work yet?”

“No, I start on Wednesday.”

“At Memorial, right?”

“Yeah.” I smile, and a strange thought comes to mind. Has she been spying on me for Nathan? He did say she knows everything and yet, never once has she made out that she has.

Hmm. I wonder if he asked her to check on me for him.

“How are you?” I ask.

“Good, good. Nothing new here. Back to you. Have you caught up with all of your friends?”

“Yes, I’ve been out to dinner every night this week.”

“Oh...” She seems taken aback. “Have you seen Nathan at all?”

And there it is. She knows I haven’t. “Not yet. Hopefully soon.”

“You should let him know you’re in town. He would love to see you.”

“Yeah, I was going to call him tonight, actually.”

“Oh, great.” She gasps as if her work is done. “Well, I’ll let you get off the phone then so you can call him.”

“He’s probably busy.”

“No, he has nothing going on.” She snaps as if frustrated.

I smile broadly. Why, you sly, old fox. “Okay, I might. I’ll see how I feel.”
