“He tell you when he was supposed to do the heist?”

“Tonight, but that’s about all he’s given up.” Graysen puts a cell phone down on my desk. “That’s his.” I grab it. “I unlocked it.” Of course he did. The man is worth every penny I pay him.

“He thinks he’s working with BNA?”

“Yes, he’s not smart enough to have gotten himself into shit like this.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a keycard. Our keycard.

“You need—”

“Already on it, sir. Miles is here now doing his thing.” I nod.

“We need to go through those shipments. They’ve been doing the thefts before customs check.”

“I was waiting for you to give me the order. The only thing I can guess is drugs.”

“What has Anderson gotten himself into? When did he put his father into that retirement home?” I ask. BNA is one of the smaller companies we do importing for, but they’ve been with me from the start. Anderson’s father Henry started a construction company before I was even a thought in my parents’ head.

He began doing small remodels himself, and over time, the business grew. I get it. Henry Holdings was very charismatic. He could even pull me into some of his stories and small talk. Not something I’m usually known to do. Before he retired, his company BNA Holdings was building multi-million-dollar homes. His clientele were people who wanted marble and stone shipped in from Italy and other areas around the world. That’s where my company came in.

“I think he retired about six months ago.” That sounds about right.

I don't think Henry wanted to, but his memory was going. He only has one son, and his wife passed away a few years back. I could always tell by how Henry talked about his son he didn't have a lot of faith in him.

I go through Travis' phone and bingo, I spot a text with someone named Andrew. I’m going to guess that’s short for Anderson. They’re vague but not vague enough.

“He owes him a lot of money,” I say, but I’m sure Graysen already knows that. “Shit,” I mutter when I see a few veiled threats with Anderson saying he’ll go after Travis’s sister. “How did he get himself wrapped up in this? Why the hell would he be borrowing money from Anderson?”

“From what I’ve gathered, Anderson is involved in underground gambling.”

“Of course he is.” I sigh. Kid is making a mess out of everything his father built.

I tap the photos icon next to see what Travis took pictures of. I scroll through them but freeze when a picture of a beautiful dark-haired girl with green eyes fills the screen. She’s smiling for the picture. Her arm is wrapped around another girl. Travis’s sister. I stare, captivated by her.

She has to be the most beautiful creature I’ve ever seen. A strange sensation starts to fill my chest. I ignore it. I want her. The thought is foreign to me. Not wanting something but wanting a woman. That’s something that’s never happened to me before.

“Who is she?” I turn the phone around to show Graysen.

“Blonde is—”

“Not Travis’s sister, Raegan. The other one.”

“I’m not sure, but I think I’ve seen her on Raegan’s social media.”

“I want to know everything you can find about her.” Graysen gives me a puzzled look for a second before he quickly schools his expression.

“What do you want me to do about Travis? We calling the cops or do you want to handle this a different way?”

“He can wait. First, I need information on the girl,” I say, having a feeling Travis’s fate might very well lie within her hands.

I check the time again and see that I’m still on track. Nothing irritates my boss more than being late. Not only that, he thinks anything that’s not completed five minutes before the scheduled time is late. I’ve made it a habit to have everything ready for him twenty minutes prior to the deadline so there aren’t any issues. Except his coffee. That would make the coffee too cold for his liking then. It’s always the last thing that I do.

Today I came in even earlier to prepare the conference room for a meeting. Mr. Lawson has been working on the Four Stones deal for a while. I have all the portfolios printed out and bound together to make it as easy as possible for everyone to go through. We’ve been working on this deal for over a month now.

I think it’s actually the biggest one I’ve seen pass through Lawson Enterprises since I got here. Of course they’ve had bigger, but this is the first one of this caliber that I’ve been a part of. I’ve only been here a little over nine months now. That was after I did an internship here for three months prior.

Once my internship ended, I was offered a position as one of Lawson’s assistants. He has a handful of us that all do different things. I handle more of the busy work that is handed off. I got the position because one assistant was fired, and I happened to be standing next to her when it happened. He looked at me, asked my name, and said the job was now mine. And then he clarified his statement by saying it was mine until I messed up and then he would fire me.
