“Yes!” I gush, hugging his head and laughing. I hear him drop the box as he wraps his arms around me, laughing too.

“You have to let me finish,” he says. “Or it’s not official.”

I force myself to pull back. I calm down, take a few deep breaths, then nod.

The sound of something rattling draws our attention downwards. Amelia has rushed between us. She’s holding the ring box and shaking it aggressively, small eyes bulging with rapture.

“Can I have that back, Sweetie?” Nolan asks.

Amelia gives it a few good more shakes, just to be safe. Then she sticks it up towards him and grunts. “Uh, uh!” she shouts.

He takes the box, turns his attention back to me, and clears his throat. “Mia, will you marry me?”

“Can I say ‘yes’ now?”

He nods.

“Yes.” My voice is thick and I have to swallow back a ball of emotion as I watch him slide the ring on my finger.

Maddox breaks the silence with a celebratory whoop as Nolan stands and kisses me. The guys give us about four seconds before Nolan is getting pulled away from me and the guys are all ripping their shirts off in solidarity.

Like animals, they start celebrating. They’re chanting “Mar-ried. Mar-ried. Mar-ried,” as they push Nolan back up on the coffee table. He’s pumping his fists and they’re jumping and shoving at him. Even Jake and Liam have come in from outside to join in the chaos. Amelia doesn’t know what’s going on, but she is trying to get her shirt off. Maddox scoops her up in one arm and carefully parades her around the swarm of huge hockey men. The little girl screams at the top of her lungs, eyes bulging. She looks like she’s having a blast.

I smile and take it all in. I lift my hand and look at the ring in stunned disbelief.

Engaged. I just got engaged.

I’m engaged to the man I thought got away for good, I’m the chef at one of the most exciting new fine dining restaurants in the country. It feels like some the sort of dream I’ve woken from on sleepy mornings and tried desperately to fall back into. Except this is all real, even if I can hardly believe it.

“Get up here,” Nolan says, reaching for me.

I smile as I’m gently prodded and pushed toward the table. Nolan takes my hand, pulls me up to join him, then wraps his arms around me and kisses me.

ONE FROSTY PUCKING MEET CUTE - SNEAK PEAK (ANDI)

My wedding veil is on the passenger seat, my poofy ass dress is trying to suffocate me in the tiny little car, and I’m officially on the lam.

That’s me. Bride on the lam. Nuptial Nomad. Hitched Houdini. Or for thriller fans, I could go with Gown Gone Girl.

I smile, aware I must look like a complete lunatic. I’ve cried through my makeup, my bare feet are filthy from my unplanned escape, and I’m pretty sure I got some forest debris in my hair.

It’s fine, though. Totally fine. Between the twigs in my hair and the ruined wedding dress, I probably look like a forest nymph. A beautiful, crazy, confused forest nymph.

Right now, I imagine my family is calling everyone I know to track me down. The police might even be involved. Am I in a high speed police chase?

I check my rearview mirror and sigh with relief. It’s just me and the open mountain road winding up toward the sleepy little town of Frosty Harbor. I’ve got the chilly winter air, the towering Vermont mountains, and the only slightly smelly interior of my old car to myself.

It’s moments like this when a girl realizes she could have made a few practical decisions during her bridal bailout. Putting on underwear, for example. Swinging by the apartment for toiletries and a few changes of clothes? Yep. Those would’ve been good ideas, but today is apparently not a day for forward thinking and good ideas.

I’m driving to Frosty Harbor because it’s where my brother was planning to spend the holidays. One of their star players is injured and lives in a cabin there, so all the starters were going to set up a home base in the small town to keep him company and cheer him up.
