I kiss her fiercely, gripping her face between my hands.
“Thank me for what?” I stare in her eyes.
“For everything,” she whispers, her hands atop mine. “For your loyalty to my family but your sacrifice for me. Your willingness to give up… everything that mattered to you.”
“Rosa,” I tell her, shaking my head. “None of it mattered when it came to you. You’re what matters in the end.”
We sit in silence, watching the landscape pass us.
“It feels almost surreal, doesn’t it?” she whispers. “That we’re finally together. That we don’t have to hide. That the family’s at peace with no one attacking us…”
I decide now’s probably not the time to tell her of the latest whispers of the Feds on our tails. It ain’t the first time and it won’t be the last time. We’ve got this. We always do.
“One moment of peace,” I say to her.
“And a lifetime of promise,” she finishes.
I silence her with a kiss, as we bask in our happy ending.
