“It means he’s trustworthy. That’s the highest military medal there is. They don’t just give those to anyone, and you know it. The guy’s a certified winner on paper… let’s see if he fits in with you miscreants. You say you only want the best.” The captain stood up and took his jacket off the back of the chair. “I think you just got him.”
God watched the captain leave, his word final. He couldn’t refute this. He’d have to give the guy a shot. If he was a cowboy and refused to take orders, God would go all the way to the mayor if he had to. He wouldn’t put his men in harm’s way.
“The Medal of Honor.” Michaels raised his eyebrows and whistled. “That’s heavy.”
“What’s it awarded for, exactly? I’m not from a military background and I don’t feel like googling it,” Syn asked.
“It’s awarded for valor. Going above and beyond the call of duty. Only given by the President,” God informed his team. “Alright, enough stroking his dick, the guy hasn’t even gotten here yet. Syn, I want you to tell Tech to get in here early tomorrow and see what else he can pull up on this guy before he arrives. Also, tell him to get the simulation programs together; let’s see this guy in action.”
“No problem,” Syn said, pulling on his thick denim jacket.
“No need to sit here and be pissed Cash. Let’s go home. Got a long week ahead of us.” Day stopped touching him and just that fast the pain in his neck returned.
Tech
It was still dark when he pulled his Tahoe into the station parking lot. The shift change didn’t start for another two-and-a-half hours so he was able to get a space close to the door, which started his early morning off right. He’d had a really good session with his personal trainer on Saturday and for some reason, when his muscles ached it made him feel strong, like the men in his team.
Syn asked him to come in a little early because they were getting a new recruit. Which he thought odd because God usually gave them sufficient notice when he was even thinking of bringing on another member. It took months of going through qualifications and testing. He had to admit he was curious and more than a little excited to see who had qualified to run with these guys.
He walked through the desolate bullpen, heading to the rear of the station where their department was located. The lights were already on, which stunned him, he was typically first to arrive if no one pulled an all-nighter or made an overnight arrest. If anything, the Enforcers would be just heading home at this hour.
He opened the glass doors, surprised to find Syn at his desk, going through a stack of papers. He looked well rested and extremely handsome in his worn Levi’s and black dress shirt, that bright gold badge suspended around his corded neck. His olive skin and constant five o’clock shadow were a huge turn-on for anyone, male or female, but those dark eyes and kind smile made him an unpredictable and deadly detective. “Morning, Sarge. You’re here early.”
“Yep. Wanted to meet you here so we could try to gather as much as we can on this guy before God and Day get in. Last I checked in on him he was still pissed. They have a meeting with IA this morning, but they should be here by ten.”
“No problem. So, how’s Furi?” Tech asked while he went about powering up his computers. The loud whirring of the internal fans and the awakening of his powerful CPUs was a symphony to his ears.
“He’s good. Happy.” Syn smiled a smile that was reserved for mentions of his partner.
Tech nodded and averted his eyes. It had to be nice to have someone to go home to each night. Someone who understood the demands of the job and didn’t constantly bitch at you about it or lord it over you. The last boyfriend Tech tried to have was over three years ago and had lasted a good nine months – the longest he’d ever been with someone. He’d loved Jason and thought they were going to build a life together, but Tech was on call twenty-four hours a day and Jason couldn’t handle being second string. Tech wouldn’t change his job for anything in the world, so he’d regrettably let his boyfriend go.
Now all he had was his work. If anything, Tech wanted more responsibilities, but he was currently working on that. When the time was right, he’d go to his lieutenants about it. In the meantime, this was his contribution to righting some of the vast numbers of wrongs in his home city.
“How’s your dad? I saw some more pictures he posted on his Facebook page, they’re so beautiful. The one with the rainbow after that thunderstorm… Jesus. I can’t imagine what it’s like to live in those mountains and see images like that all the time.”
