“I know,” I grumble with an eye roll.

“You better not be rolling your eyes at me.”

“I’m not,” I laugh as I move onto my other foot.

We chat for another half hour discussing classes, the assignment, and life in general before I hear Jared getting home.

Mom doesn’t allow me to hang up until I’ve promised to send her the pictures from the boys’ locker room with some ridiculous lie about wanting to help me decide which photos to use. In reality, I know she’s a little more interested in checking out the man-meat and figuring out which player she’d like to see me with.

I hop up from my bed, hoping my nails have fully dried, and follow the enticing smell of Chinese food into the kitchen.

“Yummm,” I moan as I make my presence known, noticing Jared and his boyfriend, Ashton, sitting up at the counter. “God, I hope there’s enough to share.”

“Girl, I know better than to come home without bringing you ladies dinner,” Jared smirks, knowing us all too well.

“I thank God for you every day, Jared,” I say, crossing the kitchen and wrapping my body around his in the tightest hug.

“Shut up and dig in,” he laughs, leaning back and pulling a clean plate out of the dishwasher behind him.

“What’s that smell?” I hear Sophie call from her bedroom.

“Get your skinny ass out here,” I yell back. “The boys bought us Chinese.”

She comes rushing down the hallway in nothing but her pajama shorts and a hot pink bra and smirks when she sees the plate Jared has just retrieved for her. She grabs it enthusiastically before reaching up on her tippy-toes and pressing a kiss to his cheek. “What do you say to a movie night?”

“I’m in,” Ashton pipes up, hopping off the counter and making his way into the living room, being sure to smack Jared on the ass on his way past. We all follow behind with our dinner and flop down around the TV, Sophie and I sprawled out on one couch while Jared and Aston claim the other.

“This is amazing,” Sophie grumbles as she stuffs a forkful into her mouth, her eyes rolling in delight.

“Mmmm,” I agree, shoveling my own food in like I’ve been starved for a month.

Jared places his plate down on the coffee table and heads down the hallway, coming back a minute later with pillows and blankets for all. “Alright,” he says, glancing over our selections. “It’s either The Notebook or Burlesque.”

“Burlesque,” we all say in unison, though Sophie and I grumble it with full mouths.

Jared laughs and hits play as we all settle in for a perfect night. “You bitches are going to give yourselves muffin tops if you keep eating like that.”

“Don’t stress,” Sophie smirks. “I get enough action. I don’t have to worry about a muffin top.”

“Oh, and what about you?” Ashton asks me with eyebrows raised.

“I’m fine,” I huff, earning a scoff from both Sophie and Jared. “What? I am.”

“You’re not, babe,” Sophie says. “But you will be if Miller Cain has anything to do with it.”

Ahh, shit.

Chapter 4

Miller

Why hasn’t she called me yet? This is getting ridiculous, and it’s definitely not how this game is played. I give a girl my number, she calls me. Simple. But I haven’t heard a peep from this chick, and it’s killing me. Miller Cain does not get rejected. It’s just a fact. She hasn’t even sent a text telling me to fuck off. I can work with that, but what I can’t work with is radio silence.

It’s been a few days since Dani first graced me with her presence, and so far, the girls have come to a few of our training sessions. I must admit, I’m enjoying their audience, and I know the rest of the guys are too. They’ve been killing it during practice, giving one hundred and ten percent, and I know for a fact that’s not because they’re listening to Coach’s demands.

The girls have been keeping to themselves, sitting up in the grandstand, taking photos, and scribbling notes before packing up and heading out. They asked Johnny for an interview for their “Hockey Hottie of the week” bio, and man, I have never seen a kid look so stoked about chatting with a bunch of girls. They really must have worked their magic on him.

I know I’ve got Dani’s attention, but whenever I glance her way, she makes a show of being busy, searching through her bag, or taking another picture. I don’t get it. She didn’t strike me as shy that first day, so there must be another reason she’s avoiding me, and I don’t doubt that I will figure it out.

I sit with Tank as our business professor wraps up his lecture. I grab my bag from the floor and begin to stuff my pens and notepad inside. “What’s the plan for tonight?” Tank asks, getting up from his seat and trailing toward the exit.
