‘Anyway, your grandmother found out about us somehow and things fell apart. I’m sure Val told you all that transpired after that. Even though no one but your mother blamed us, the guilt was too strong and so we drifted apart again, but the love was still there, still is.’
‘Then Val went off to Europe and came back with all these crazy ideas about reincarnation and spirit attachment. I thought she was crazy at first but the fact that you’re reading this shows that she’s not and that the little experiment worked. I won’t say too much now, you’ll learn more as you go along.’
‘Suffice it to say Emily and I, when we were old and in our dotage we let her talk us into doing this. It’s selfish of us I know, but it was the only way we could be together. I’m attached to you because of the spell she cast on the house and Emily is attached to Jessica the same way.’
‘Now that you know we’re here, you can send us away anytime, but I’m hoping you won’t banish us to a life of misery, that you’ll let us come out every once in a while. You’ll know when we’re around, whenever you find yourself walking in your dreams to the house with the red roof. By the way, we like the dark….’
I stared at the piece of paper for the longest while, processing all that I’d learned. When I looked at Jessica she looked sad, forlorn. I reached out and pulled her from her chair onto my lap and nuzzled her. “Let’s turn out the lights and go to bed.”
She didn’t resist when I got to my feet and carried her into the bedroom and laid her down on the bed. Two minutes later I was inside her again.
The End
