I feel worse.
“We’re going at our own pace,” Luna says, quieter.
Lily seems conflicted and mortified. I can’t put Luna in hot water with her parents. I think it might be better if I remove myself from the situation. Give it room to breathe and whatnot.
“I’m gonna go,” I say.
“No.” Luna catches my hand. “You’re staying the night.”
“Maybe it’s good if he goes,” Lily says, which I agree but hearing her say it is like watching a baby whale suffocate. Think I might be the baby whale.
“Mom—”
“Just for tonight,” Lily says fast, not wanting to alarm Luna.
“I can go with you,” Luna tells me.
“I want you to stay.” I wrap my arms around her in a bear-hug. She holds tighter, and I whisper against her hair. “We’re alright, but I need to go, Luna. Call me if you need me or if you can’t sleep? I know a guy who loves droning on about Bass, and I promise he’ll bore you to sleep.”
“I don’t think that’s possible,” she murmurs, stepping out of my arms. Her eyes are reddened, but she sniffs, then lifts a Vulcan salute. “Live long and prosper.”
I kiss her cheek. “It’s never goodbye, space babe.” And then I walk away.
I hate this.
That’s the truth. But I love her more, and it’s better if I go. It’s better if I go. I convince myself of this, and on my way out the kitchen door, I say, “Sorry, Lily.”
Her palms are comically hiding her flushed face, but the way she ignores me isn’t that funny. So I grab my shit from the guest room and leave the Hale House. Instead of hijacking Epsilon’s car that I just returned, I consider asking Farrow if I can borrow his.
That entails waking him up. He has a newborn, and I’m not interrupting his few hours of good sleep tonight. So once I’m outside, I call another friend.
“You’re so lucky I’m awake, bro,” Oscar says, sounding alert like he’s been up the past two hours.
“You in the great state of PA?” I stand on the curb, my nipples hardened peaks from the cold, and I tuck my arms closer to my body.
“We all are after the news.”
Grandfather Calloway’s death. Feels like an eon ago that I heard about it. “How soon can you be at the Hale House?”
“Ten minutes. Why?”
“I need a ride.”

Notes: Been making myself scarce with the Hale household (minus Luna). Lily hasn’t invited me back, but I’d fly there if I were welcome. Wish Xander needed a bodyguard ‘cause it’d be a good excuse to stop by. Think I’m in exile. Will def fix that soon.
