“You’re not planning your future; you’re guarding your heart, and there is nothing wrong with that, Mel. If I can give you a bit of advice?”

I nodded.

“Just enjoy your time with Jax. Don’t think about it too much. Have fun, do something crazy, and what happens will happen. So you end up having a vacation fling, maybe that’s what you’ve been needing. Not everything in your life has to be a plan.”

They were both right, I knew that. But there was something about Jax that made me not want to simply have a fling. Then again, if I left the Keys with only kissing him, I knew I would regret it the rest of my life.

“Speaking of plans,” I said as I cleared my throat. “Will you both be joining me and Jax to watch the fireworks?”

After yet another exchanged look between one another, Parker grinned. “We kind of met two brothers on the beach this morning, and they invited us to a party. We told them we’d have to talk to you first because there is no way in hell we would leave you alone, and if you didn’t want to come, we weren’t going either.”

Laughing, I said, “So much for a girls’ vacation. Please go if you want, I can hang out with Jax this evening.”

Lori flashed me a wicked smile as she said, “Wouldn’t you rather come, than go?”

“I’m hoping we all come this evening!” Parker said with a straight face.

It took me a few moments to get the joke, and I picked up a pillow and threw it across the room in their direction as we fell into a fit of giggles.

Jax had laid a blanket down on the sand, and I was tucked in between his legs as we looked up into the night sky and watched the fireworks. With each bang, my heart felt like it pounded in my chest. It wasn’t from the fireworks, but from the feel of Jax’s body and mine so close together. There was a handful of other people on the beach, all of them employees of the resort since this area of the island was for them and not guests.

As the fireworks went on, I couldn’t help but think about what Lori and Parker said. I needed to do something spontaneous, and I knew from the feel of Jax pushing into my back as I laid against him, that he wanted me as much as I wanted him. I stared up at the final explosion of lights in the sky and placed my hand over my chest. It was a beautiful sight, but that wasn’t what had my heart pounding.

I was going to do something I was terrified to do. Not simply because I was worried about rejection, although I was pretty sure Jax wouldn’t reject me, but the feelings I had for him I knew would grow strong once we slept together.

When the sky slowly darkened and those around us started to leave, I drew in a deep breath, then gasped when I felt Jax’s mouth on my neck. I tilted my head to give him better access, and felt my entire body heat when he placed soft kisses down to my shoulder.

“Mel,” he whispered as his hand came around and wrapped tightly around my stomach, drawing me closer to him. “Please tell me you want this as much as I do.”

I nearly jumped up and dragged him back to his cottage.

“I do, Jax. Please.”

It was one word, that was it. Jax clearly knew what I was asking for because he quickly had us both up, the blanket, bottle of wine, and two glasses were packed away, and he took my hand.

Laughing, I said, “You’re going to pull my arm out of its socket if you don’t slow down!”

The moment he shut the door to his cottage, Jax pulled me into his arms and kissed me. It was a passionate kiss, and for a moment I felt lightheaded. When we broke apart, he placed his forehead to mine.

“Are you sure?”

“I want you, Jax.”

His eyes met mine, and when he smiled, I felt my entire body heat. “I want you too, Mel.”

Taking my hand in his, he walked toward his bedroom. I wasn’t sure why my heart hammered in my chest like I was about to have sex for the first time, but something about the moment felt different than any other time I’d been with someone. Not that I had made a habit of sleeping with guys; there had only been two I had ever given myself to.

Jax stopped and turned to face me. Cupping my face with his hands, he brushed his lips gently over mine. I appreciated that Jax was moving slowly, but I needed to feel him against me.

When I drew back slightly, I bit down on my lip before I said, “Jax, I need to feel you inside of me.”
