By the time I put on the wedding dress that he’d had delivered at the last minute, I was asking myself why the hell I had to be crazy even in this instance. I was nervous, but not for the reasons you would think. I was terrified that he might change his mind. That should’ve been my first clue that I was getting in over my head.
I had none of these feelings leading up to the wedding I was planning with Denny. If he showed fine, if he didn’t, there was a party already paid for. That has been my thinking all along. So why did I have butterflies in my stomach and weak knees?
I wanted to remain carefree and unbothered, and I did a good job pretending, but I don’t think anyone believed me. My brothers asked me one last time if I was sure and took my nod of ascent as my final answer.
The dress fit like it had been made for me, and the seamstress he sent didn’t need to make any alterations. I must’ve stared at my image for a good ten minutes, almost in a trance. I looked exactly the way I always dreamt of on my wedding day.
The only problem was I could never find this exact dress. I’m still not sure how he knew, but it was too late to worry about that now. The pearl and diamond necklace and earring set he sent was worth more than I will ever make in a lifetime I’m sure. And the matching tiara was just the added dazzle my southern belle heart desired. I looked and felt like the princess I am.
It was then I realized I didn’t have a ring for him. I’d returned the one I was going to use for Denny and had left the engagement ring Denny gave me at home in a drawer. I was about to panic before I remembered where we were. What self-respecting wedding resort wouldn’t have something I could use in a clutch?
I ran down to the boutique five minutes after opening in my dress and house slippers, and took about ten minutes to find something. I had to guess at the size, but since it wasn’t going to be his forever ring, I wasn’t too stressed.
He had a shit ton of flowers delivered to the room, along with more champagne and chocolates. Everyone else was buzzing around, filled with excitement while I was trying to remember how to breathe. I was waiting for someone to tell me this was bonkers, to talk some sense into me, but none of them did. I guess he’d won them over on his little boat ride the day before.
Even on my walk to the beach where the ceremony was being held, I kept expecting something to happen, but I made it there with no mishaps. There were cameras going off with each step I took, and I knew it was more than the photographer I’d hired with the wedding package.
He looked hot as hell in a tux as he waited for me on the beach where our vows were being held. He’d taken care of the license, as he said, and everything went as smoothly as possible for something that had only been in the works so last minute.
What I wasn’t expecting was his family to be there. I knew who they were when I walked down the aisle and saw them sitting on what was supposed to be the groom’s side, and for some reason, that made the whole thing more real.
Like he’d told his mother and father and grandparents, even his siblings were there. No one was frowning or seemed upset, which I guess is a good sign. I don’t remember saying my vows or hearing his, but I do recall him slipping that boulder on my finger.
I’m human, a female one at that, so I would be lying if I didn’t say that I couldn’t wait to show it off. It was a dazzling emerald cut with two baguette diamonds on the side which I would estimate to be at least ten carats. I’m gonna have to get my whole ass insured to walk around with this thing.
The kiss, shit, forget the ring. Who the hell kisses someone like that in front of other people? He fooled me at first by teasing my lips with a soft touch, then that fool wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me in close, and those lips were no longer teasing.
I don’t think I breathed once, not even when he lifted his head and smirked down at me. “I bet you can’t do that again.” Only the officiant heard my dare, and I’m sure the poor man wished he could be anywhere but here when my new husband took the challenge and tried to swallow my face.
