No.

Emotion bursts inside me and a tear rises to the surface, no matter how hard I try to keep it down. “You can’t think that, Western. You can’t sit back and let him live his life being a cold-hearted monster while your name is tarnished. He pulled the trigger. He killed Braithe.”

He doesn’t answer.

He doesn’t say a thing.

“You should fight,” I go on, moving even closer until we’re standing right in front of each other, “you should bring him down. He doesn’t deserve to get away with what he’s done.”

Nothing.

“No,” I say, when he goes to turn away. I take hold of his shirt, stopping him. “No, don’t shut down now, please don’t shut down. Talk to me.”

He reaches down, uncurling my fingers from his shirt. “We’re done.”

“Western, please,” I plead, almost frantically. “Please don’t.”

He walks out of the shed, leaving me standing alone.

Throwing my head back, I scream with frustration.

I am so close, yet so incredibly far away.

I need more. I need to fix this.

Why won’t he let me in?

A warm, hard body slips in beside me, and when a set of arms go around me and a familiar scent tickles my nose, I know it’s Leo without so much as opening my eyes. I’ve only just made it home, had a shower and gotten into bed when he decided to let himself into my apartment and crawl in with me. It’s not unusual for him to do that, especially if we’ve been fighting, which we have.

“I’m sorry, Bon,” he murmurs, pulling me closer. “I was a dick.”

Rolling to face him, I wrap my arms around his waist and press my nose into his chest, breathing him in. “You are a dick,” I answer, groggily, “but nothing you could do would ever make me not love you.”

He squeezes me again in acknowledgment.

“So, would it be dicky of me to ask why you smell like weed?”

Moaning, I pull back and lie flat on my back. My head is beginning to pound, and I have already decided that there is no way I can ever keep up with the amount of drinking those club members do. I don’t know how they function every day, because I would be a right mess if I did that.

“I went to the club again. Those guys know how to party. I do not.”

Leo doesn’t say anything, and I know it’s probably killing him not to. He doesn’t like me going to the club, be he has also figured out by now there is nothing he can say that will stop me.

“Don’t worry,” I go on, a pathetic attempt at reassurance, “they love me around there. I’m safe, I promise.”

“They’re criminals, Bon. You know that, right?”

Yet I’ve never seen them do a single violent or illegal thing since I’ve been there, except using drugs, but that’s not something you don’t see in other places, too.

“Maybe they are, but I sure as hell don’t see any of it. They don’t scare me, Leo. They’re good to me, kind even. I like them.”

“Until you see something you can’t unsee, and then you’ll wish you listened to me.”

“Did you come here to apologize or to fight some more?” I mutter.

He exhales, rolling to his back and fluffing the pillow beneath his head. “Fine, you got me. I’m sorry, but I’m always going to protect you.”

“I love that, just know that I’m probably always going to do exactly what you don’t want me to do, but you need to remember that’s the reason you love me so much.”

He snorts. “You got me there. Tell me, anyway. Was it good shit?”

I laugh, finally, he’s loosened up a little.

“The weed?”

He chuckles. “No, the beer.”

Smiling, I close my eyes. “It wasn’t bad, wasn’t bad at all.”

I have absolutely no idea what is good and what isn’t, but the method in which it was delivered was quite pleasant, so I’m going to base my decision on that, instead. Yawning, Leo falls silent beside me. Closing my eyes, I can’t stop the inevitable any longer. I’m too tired, high, and a little tipsy. I need to sleep.

Within minutes, that’s exactly what I’m doing.

WAKING IN THE MORNING, tangled in hot, heavy male, my eyes slowly flutter open. Leo is sleeping beside me, our legs intertwined, his arm thrown over me. He hasn’t got a shirt on, and he’s softly snoring. As my vision clears, I stare over at him, and wonder how the hell I’m going to get out of this bed without waking him. As I slowly untangle us, I can’t help but wonder how his future girlfriends will see this situation?

Or better yet, how my future boyfriends might.

I haven’t been on a date in a long, long time.

I’ve been so caught up in work that I haven’t had time.

Well, that’s not entirely because the male population hasn’t tried, they have, but I always turn them down.
