I try in vain to clench around him.

How can he stand this torture?

How can he hold himself back?

While he’s made me orgasm every day this week, sometimes multiple times, he hasn’t come at all.

The muscle in his jaw ticks a mad rhythm.

It’s the only telltale sign that he’s fighting himself just as much as he’s fighting me.

It’s become a battle of wills.

A standoff.

One I won’t win.

One, I realize, I don’t want to win.

He drags my face even closer until his mouth can collide with mine. His tongue licks at the seam of my lips before shoving inside. There’s the scrape of teeth as the kiss turns frenzied. My hips buck against his, searching for relief.

He pulls away just enough to stare into my eyes. “Don’t you want me, sweet girl?”

“You know I do.”

Doubt flickers in his expression.

It’s enough to kill me.

“Then say it. Give yourself over to me.”

“I want you, Colby.”

His palms tighten around my cheeks to hold me in place. “Tell me that you’re my wife.”

Even though I should keep some distance between us until he knows the truth, I can’t help but blurt, “I’m your wife. I belong to you.”

With those seven little words, he surges deep inside me until we’re fused together.

It’s like a detonation within my core, and an orgasm explodes throughout my being. The force of it nearly robs my lungs of oxygen. As soon as I cry out, he tumbles over the edge. His hands stay locked around my head as our gazes remain fastened the entire time.

“My wife,” he chants over and over until I have no choice but to believe that this will end up being our reality.

That it can’t turn out any other way.

No matter the obstacles that seem insurmountable.

No matter what secrets I have yet to share.

COLBY

The arena buzzes with anticipation as I jump onto the ice for warmups. The puck drops in thirty minutes and already the stands are packed. It’s a sea of orange and black. Heavy rock pumps through the loudspeakers in an attempt to hype the crowd. When the fans are amped, the energy in the arena turns electric, making us feel invincible on the ice.

There’s nothing unusual about the adrenaline humming through my veins.

But tonight, it’s more than just pregame jitters.

As I circle our half of the ice with my stick lying against my shoulders, taking long strides to stretch my muscles, my gaze combs over the spectators, looking for one person in particular.

It’s been a long time since I’ve invited someone to watch me play.

For the past four years, I’ve closed myself off emotionally, not wanting to get hurt again.

But Britt is worth taking a chance on.

Not because I drunkenly tied myself to her in a spur-of-the-moment decision.

But because I actually like her and want this to work.

The longer I go without spotting her in the stands, the more it messes with my head until she’s all I can think about.

Focus on.

I’ve never experienced anything like this before.

Not even with Anna.

She never felt like the beginning and end of my world.

Britt is different.

I realized it the first time I laid eyes on her.

All it took was one conversation to confirm it.

Maybe I was able to force her into admitting that she belongs to me and is my wife the other night in bed, but it’s not enough. I want her to say it because that’s how she truly feels.

Not because I’m holding her orgasm hostage.

Sometimes, it feels like I’m walking a tightrope. I’m trying to show her how amazing we could be so she’ll give us an honest shot. But I’m also trying to give her the time and space to wrap her head around what I’ve already accepted.

That we belong together.

It’s not like I was looking for a relationship senior year of college, months from when everything in my world will change, but that’s exactly what happened. And I’ll do everything in my power to make it work.

As I loop around for a second time, I’m slammed with the realization that Britt might not show up. Sure, I’d thrown out the invitation and she’d agreed, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll do it.

Maybe she forgot.

Or is busy doing something else.

Like scouring the internet for divorce attorneys.

Even the thought terrifies me.

There’s only so many times I can force her to say that she’s my wife and I’m her husband while we’re having sex.

Fun fact—it gets me off every fucking time.

Who would have thought?

It’s only when Hayes pulls up alongside me that I force my attention to him.

His gaze searches mine from behind his visor. “You good?”

I jerk my head into a tight nod. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?”

“I don’t know.” He shrugs his padded shoulders. “You seem distracted.”

Fuck.

He’s right.

I didn’t think it was noticeable.

“Nope. Not at all.”

I hold my breath, hoping he’ll do me a solid and drop the topic.
