It’s a relief when he drops the topic and says instead, “I’ll drive you so you’re not late.”

Unwilling to consider the offer, I shake my head.

I need time away from Wolf before I meet my mystery man. I sneak another peek at my cell. Even if I set up a ride right now, there’s no way I won’t be late. The probability of a car making it here in less than ten minutes is low.

I chew my bottom lip with indecision.

My attention gets pulled back to him when his fingers slide across my cheek. There’s something comforting about his gentle touch. It’s tempting to sink into it and squeeze my eyes shut, blotting out the world around us.

“Just let me drive you,” he murmurs.

It’s such a bad idea…

But what choice is there?

“Yeah, okay,” I say, giving in. “Thank you.”

“It’s not a problem.”

Ten minutes later, we’re in his Mustang and heading downtown. Every couple seconds his gaze flickers in my direction. I feel the heat of his probing stare like a physical caress. I couldn’t be more aware of it—or him—if I tried.

Unable to meet his searching gaze, I stare out the passenger side window. Once upon a time, I thought Wolf would be the one to take my virginity. How weird is it that he’s driving me to have sex with another man?

Even if he doesn’t realize it.

I chew my lower lip and stare blindly out the passenger side window. Only now do I realize that allowing Wolf to drive me here was a mistake. I hate that he’ll forever be tied to this experience.

When we’re a couple blocks from the hotel, I point to a medical center. “You can drop me off right here.”

He glances at the three-story brick building on the left side of the street. A light snow drifts from the sky and dusts the sidewalk. “Should I wait?”

Absolutely not.

How horrific would that be?

To see him after…

Would he take one look at me and realize what happened?

“No. I’m not sure how long the appointment will last.”

“I don’t mind. I’ve got time to burn before practice.”

My fingers shake as they wrap around the door handle before jerking it open so I can slip from the vehicle. “I’ll find my own way home. Thanks.”

His gaze bores into mine, holding it ensnared. “Are you sure?”

“Yup.”

There’s a pause as his dark brows draw together. Emotion flashes across his features as his tongue darts out to moisten his lips. “Fallyn, there’s something I need—”

I can’t do this with him.

Not now.

My head is already messed up. I need to see this through and get it over with. Maybe, at a later date, we can sit down and discuss what happened between us. But that’s not something I can do right now. I can’t think about Wolf when I’m about to have sex for the first time with another man.

The thought turns my stomach.

“Please,” I whisper. “I can’t do this right now. Just give me a little time.”

Storm clouds gather in his eyes, turning them vibrant. “I know but—”

“We’ll talk tomorrow.”

Before another word can escape from him, I slam the car door and twist away, taking off at a brisk pace. I’m so afraid that he won’t accept my answer and will try to follow me. With my shoulders hunched, I slip inside the building and head toward the back, searching for an exit that will lead to the alleyway. My heart thrashes as I glance over my shoulder to make sure that I’m still alone.

A potent concoction of confusion and sadness swirls around inside me. I hate that this is the way our lives have played out.

But there’s nothing I can do about it.

I have to see this through.

Only then will I be able to move forward.

Chapter 25

Wolf

Even after Fallyn disappears through the glass doors and into the building, I stare at the last place I saw her before dragging a rough hand over my face and slamming my fists against the leather steering wheel.

Fuck.

I should have come clean when I had the chance and admitted that not only am I the one who bought her virginity, but that I know why she’s so desperate for cash.

One call to my asshole father filled me in on the situation. He’d crowed about finally stealing the company from Hugo and bankrupting the DiMarcos.

It had made me gut sick.

But how could I reveal the truth without her hating me even more than she already does? Only now am I starting to make progress where Fallyn is concerned. There’s no way I can go back to a life she isn’t a part of. These past years, I’ve been living in black and white. Her presence has filled my world with so much vibrant color. There’s no way I can go back to existing in the darkness.

Whatever I have to do to keep her, I’ll do it.
