“Ah, hell. We’re going to be late.”

“I’ll inform Mr. Hardwick.” He calls the boss man while I finish my sandwich. “He wants to speak with you.” He pulls out his earpiece and then hands me the phone.

“Lacey, I’ll be in meetings all morning. When you arrive, bring in my coffee.”

“Yes, Mr…”

“Lincoln.”

He corrected me for the hundredth time since I started working for him. “I will have your coffee. Do you need anything for the meetings? I sent you the agenda for the nine am conference call before I left the office last night.”

“I don’t need anything else for the morning. I’ll email you if I do have some issues….” He ends the call with his words hanging in the air and I suppose I expected him to say something else, but he didn’t.

“Here you go, Greg.” I hand it back and we finally get a move on which is fine by me, so we won’t be late. I’ll give my rude boss his coffee and leave him alone for the rest of the day. God, why does it bother me so much that he doesn’t spend time around me. It’s not like he’s paying me to sit in his lap and take notes. Something, I most definitely pictured in my head a time or two.

Greg pulls up to the building and barely puts it into park when I pop out of the backseat. Normally, he’d try to help me, but I’m in a hurry. The lobby is teaming with people waiting for the elevator.

“Hey, what’s going on?” I ask the man that I step beside. I’ve never met him, but I’ve seen him around the building from time to time. There are a lot of employees that work for Lincoln Realty Investments, but they also lease out office spaces to other companies.

“These elevators aren’t working, so we’re all waiting for the same two.” The corridor that is off the front desk has five elevators, making it usually a fast trip up to the top floor.

“Oh, okay. Thanks.” I clamp my lips together while I tap my heels. Several people look at me with my impatient tapping, and I blush, stopping and slowly setting my feet flat on the marble tiles.

“Good morning, Lace,” Lawrence says, coming to a stop on my other side and placing his hand on my shoulder.

“Morning, Lawrence,” I say, giving him a smile. It’s been a while since we ran into each other. Still, my instincts are on target. He’s been flirting with me. Looking back over the six months that I worked for him, it made sense. For a boss he wasn’t bad. Although I learned that he told Mr. Hardwick it was my fault he’d been missing the documents that I’d brought up later that day I met the big boss.

“So you’re going to catch hell because you’re late, right? That’s why he fired his last assistant.” He’d fire me for it for sure if he didn’t know I was already going to be late. Still, the idea of him letting me go sends fear racing through my nerves. Panic sets in my chest as I consider not seeing the big jerk every weekday. It’s already terrible that I don’t get my fill on the weekends.

My stupid crush on him is so much worse when I’m all alone because I have too many hours between us to fantasize all day long. My besties noticed my distraction last weekend and Casey pointed out how hot Lincoln was. Bile rose in my throat when she mentioned his appeal and I knew it was pure jealousy.

“Lacey.” My name comes as a low growl from the warm body behind me. I almost step back so I can absorb his warmth, imagining his arms wrapping around my arms and engulfing in his embrace. “Davis,” Lincoln snarls, sending lust flooding my core.

“I thought you were in your office.” The accusation in my words comes out like someone who got caught doing something wrong. Not that I had.

“Excuse us,” he answers, taking me by the arm and moving us to the fifth elevator. He opens it with a keycard and steps inside. When others approach, he shakes his head, and says, “Wait for the other one.” They back off clearly afraid of him which turns me on painfully. I clench my legs together.

“They’re going to think something’s going on between us,” I inform him.

“No, they know I’m the damn boss and I don’t like sharing the elevator with anyone if I don’t have to, and I hate when things aren’t going right. I’d just been dealing with the building management to get the electricity working in numbers three through five.”

I don’t say a word because he’s already grumpy.

“Did you eat your breakfast?”

“Yes, it hit the spot. Greg’s so sweet to bring it to me.”
