I asked, “What made you return to Vegas?”

“Pride and sheer stubbornness, I guess. I’d had a run-in with someone a while back, and I just couldn’t let it go.” He paused for a moment. It seemed like there was more he wanted to say about that, but then he got up and changed the subject with, “Anyway, we should go find our hotel. It’s probably getting close to dinnertime.”

It took just a few minutes to drive to our destination, which turned out to be a luxurious resort. When I got a look at the Spanish-style buildings and lush, tropical landscaping, I whispered, “It’s like something out of a movie.” That made him smile.

As soon as we pulled up to the main entrance, our bags and the car were efficiently whisked away by the parking attendants. Marcus told me to have a seat once we got inside, so I made myself comfortable in the lobby while he went to reception.

I tried not to seem ridiculously unsophisticated as I took it all in, but this hotel was nice, in a very different way than the flashy hotels on the strip. It was going for a laid back California-casual vibe with its rattan furniture, loads of plants, and friendly staff in floral shirts, but there was no question it was extremely high-end.

Pretty soon, Marcus returned and handed me a slim, royal blue envelope embossed with a gold palm tree. “Here’s your key card,” he said. “Our rooms are ready, so would you like to go check them out?”

I got up and repeated, “Rooms, plural? As in, we’re not staying in the same one?”

He nodded. “I thought you’d want some privacy.”

That made sense, of course. We were still getting to know each other, so what did I think, that he’d booked us the honeymoon suite? He was being considerate, and that little tinge of disappointment I felt was totally unwarranted.

He led the way out the back of the building, then past a huge pool and open-air bar before pausing to look around. Finally, he gestured to the right. “I think it’s that way, according to the map at reception. I didn’t want a bellman to show us to our rooms, because it’s annoying when they hover.”

Once we found the right building, I discovered that what he called a room was actually a massive suite. “I’m going to get cleaned up,” he said, after I opened my door and took a couple of steps inside. “Would you like to meet for drinks in an hour?”

I turned back to look at him and nodded. He was still out in the hallway, fidgeting with his keycard.

“I’m right next door,” he told me, “and there’s a connecting door between our suites. Just knock if you need anything.”

“Okay. See you soon.” He continued down the hall, and I closed the door behind him. Then I wandered into the living room and muttered, “Damn.” My entire apartment could have fit in here, twice.

The style was similar to the lobby, with a subdued green, white, and tan color palette, along with warm wood tones. The tropical theme was carried through in colorful arrangements of exotic flowers, which were scattered throughout the room. There was also a welcome basket full of tropical fruit. I murmured, “So fancy,” and plucked a pineapple out of the basket. There was no way to actually eat it, so I ended up carrying it through the suite with me.

Beyond the living room was a balcony with an infinity pool, which gave way to a sweeping view of the Pacific. Okay, that was ridiculously nice. All of this was. I was totally out of my element.

I decided to take a shower and fix myself up before Marcus came to get me, so I went into the bedroom and placed the pineapple on a round, decorative throw pillow. Well, what else was I supposed to do with it?

My bags had actually made it to the suite before I did, and they looked shabby compared to their surroundings. I scooped them up and brought them with me to the bathroom, and then I unpacked the douching kit I’d stuck in the bottom of my bag.

I had every intention of throwing myself at Marcus before dinner, and that involved a bit of prep work. After using the kit and taking a very thorough shower, I took the extra step of working a bit of lube into me. Then I finished grooming and put on the fluffy white bathrobe that was hanging beside the double sinks.

After I hid my luggage and dirty clothes in the closet, I climbed onto the king-size bed with my phone. I’d planned to read my ebook for a while, but there was a text from Pete waiting for me. It said: I’m bored at work because the bar’s super dead. Come visit me!
