Like now.
Christopher could only bite back a groan when he saw the way Vixen's lips curved into the sexiest little smile.
"The thing is, Mr.—-"
"Christopher please," he finally remembered to say, and when she actually went on to obey him—-
"Okay." Her smile widened just a little. "Christopher."
Eargasm. He had never experienced it before, but he certainly knew what it sounded now, with the way his name on Vixen's lips was making his dick throb like it was about to have a fucking tantrum.
"The thing is," she said again, "I like you a lot, but..."
She started gnawing at her lip, and the sight had Christopher feeling as randy as a goat.
"I'm not sure I'm in love with you, so..." Vixen cleared her throat. "May I have half an hour? Just thirty minutes, and then I'll come back, and I'll know what to do by then."
ONCE SHE WAS BACK IN her suite, Vixen wasted no time in calling Eve, an accountant who also worked at Stanhope Medical Center...as well as being the girlfriend of Dr. Konstantin Manolis, one of the world's leading neurosurgeons.
"Vix?" Eve's soft voice held a note of surprise when she answered the call.
"I have a question I need you to answer with complete honesty," Vixen declared straight away. "It will likely seem invasive, but I promise I have crucial reasons for asking it."
"Okay." Eve was a little apprehensive, but more than that she was undeniably curious as well. This sounded rather personal, which was rare for Vixen. The other girl was sweet, but-—
"I have a crush on Christopher Masterton."
Eve nearly dropped her phone. "The football player?"
"I might also be in love with him."
Eve really did drop her phone this time, and Vixen, not realizing what had happened, found herself wincing at the hard thudding sound. "Eve? Are you still there?"
"Sorry," Eve apologized after a moment. "I, um..." She cleared her throat. "Anyway, what was that you said?"
"I think I might be in love with Christopher," Vixen repeated patiently.
"And you're, um, telling me this because..."
"I wanted to know if you think it's possible for a girl to fall in love at first sight—-"
"Well, I've always been a hopeless romantic," Eve confessed, "so I'm inclined to say yes."
"Even if said first sight was actually a man she's only seen on the telly?"
Eve was in a state of disbelief. "This girl we're talking about is you, isn't it?"
After a moment's hesitation, Vixen said reluctantly, "Yes."
"I see." But actually...Eve did not see at all. Vixen had never been interested in men, and now she was telling Eve...she had fallen in love with Christopher Masterton after seeing the guy on TV?
"Do you need more time to think about this?" Vixen asked seriously. "I still have about twenty-three minutes before I have to make up my mind."
Eve didn't know whether to laugh or cry. This question actually came with a deadline, too? Shaking her head, Eve couldn't help saying, "I don't even get why you're asking me—-"
Vixen blinked. "Of course I'd ask you. Everyone knows you fell in love at first sight with Dr. Manolis."
"Everyone?"
"You truly didn't think we'd notice?" Vixen asked dubiously.
"But I never told anyone—-"
"You didn't have to." Eve walking into walls like she had flashes of blindness had been such a common occurrence that Vixen and everyone else eventually started putting one and one together and realized who was always around each and every time it happened.
"Gosh." Eve sounded mortified. "I didn't realize I was so obvious."
"You were."
"Vix!"
"But it's alright," Vixen assured the other girl. "I wouldn't be calling you if it wasn't."
"Is that supposed to comfort me?" Eve asked laughingly.
"It doesn't?" Vixen rather thought that Eve would understand how highly Vixen thought of her wisdom and judgment, for her to be disclosing her feelings over a phone call.
Eve could only shake her head. "Never mind." Although the other girl had this incredible gift of making her patients heal and recover from physical injuries, when it came to anything that wasn't visible or tangible, Vixen was clueless as a newborn babe.
And as for what Vixen had earlier admitted to...
Eve cleared her throat. "About Christopher Masterton..."
Vixen sat up.
"I guess it's not impossible," Eve said carefully, "but it is statistically improbable—-"
"That's exactly what I was thinking, too," Vixen exclaimed.
"Then there's your answer, isn't it? And just between the two of us..." Eve couldn't help lowering her voice into a whisper even though it was just her in Konstantin's clinic. "I think love at first sight is more of a process, or a transition even, rather than this major life-changing incident."
"You make a good point."
"I believe love almost always starts with physical attraction," Eve murmured, "and given enough time and opportunity to do so, you'll eventually realize if the attraction is strong enough to deepen into love. That's why," she concluded, "I think it's always best to give feelings like this a chance."
