It’s good for him too, seeing as the other one he’d been married to had been madder than a damn hatter. She and Lenore had thought for sure that the boy would regress or something like most do in this town when something goes awry. But who knew within less than a year he’d be dipping his wick in the town’s hot new detective.

She couldn’t find fault with either of them, and she’d set anybody straight who did. It wasn’t his fault that his wife was a murdering sod now, was it? And where is it written that he had to mourn her after all she did? Of course, the new lovers were all anyone in town could talk about before the murder happened, but none of them had the nerve to say spit in Riley’s presence, or he’d give them hell. The boy always did have a wild streak.

“What brings you two out this way? You catch that jackass, what killed our little Melissa yet?” Since neither 0f them had answered Lenore as yet, she thought to ask.

“Constance, since when is she ‘our’ Melissa? Wasn’t more than a week before last when you was cussing that poor child up one side and down the other for two-timing poor Gil.”

“Yes, well, that was before she up and got herself killed, isn’t it?”

“You’re right. Shouldn’t speak ill of the dead. Okay, you two, what gives?”

Detective Sparks always feels like grinning when she sees these two and could never understand why. She was pretty sure from the glassy look in their eyes that there was something more than lemonade in their glasses, and the way the two of them were dressed like they were about to go on an expedition could be part of the reason she finds them so damn entertaining.

But that’s not why she was searching them out today, though. Now that she was here, she was beginning to have second thoughts about what she’d planned to ask of them. At the end of the day, they were two elderly women, and she could, in fact, be putting them in harm’s way. Then again, that wasn’t exactly true. They wouldn’t be doing anything more than sitting and watching a door.

“Hi ladies, how’re you two doing on this fine day?” She stepped up on Ms. Constance’s porch while Pete kept a safe distance just in case one or both of the ladies decided to have grabby hands as they’ve been known to in the past.

“We’re doing as well as is to be expected what with murderers running loose in our town. “Pete, why the hell you all the way over there, boy? Come up here and set a spell, you look like you could use it.”

“No thanks Ms. Lenore, I don’t think we’re staying long.”

“Right, ladies, I have a favor to ask.”

“Shoot.” Ms. Constance sat forward in her chair, wondering what favor the beautiful young woman was about to ask her. It was all she could do not to laugh out loud since not more than half an hour ago, her man Riley had said those same exact words to Lenore and her.

“There’s someone I want you to keep an eye on for me. It’ll only be for a few days…why are you two staring at me like that?” Celia creased her brow when the two women looked back and forth between each other before turning back to her. She didn’t know if she could trust them when they both said ‘no reason’ at the same time, but she decided to leave it for now and get on with the business at hand.

“Anyway, like I was saying. I need you to keep an eye on someone for me. I don’t want you to follow him, just call me when he leaves the building, do you think you can do that for me?”

“You mean like real detective work? Lenore and I would be on the case, so to speak?”

“Like Charlie’s Angels Constance.”

“Don’t nobody remember that shit. We’re more like The Avengers.”

“Oh yes, that Scarlett girl has a nice body, reminds me of mine when…”

“You wish. Now, who is it that you want us to spy on Detective, and where?” Constance cut her friend off before she sinned her soul with a lie. Lenore Ivory has been round since the day she came out the birth canal.

Detective Sparks gave them the information and once again cautioned them to be careful before leaving to head to Don Wilson’s office.

Riley had just made the turnoff to the farm when his phone rang. He frowned when he saw the number thinking there was no way. “Already? What the hell did she do?” That’s the way he answered Lenore’s call.

“Boy, where your manners? Your woman didn’t do spit; we didn’t even get off the front porch after you left before she showed up here. Like you two planned it or something.”
