Across the room at his desk Officer Bailey was also digging through even more papers with little scribbles and receipts, putting things into separate piles to go through again. It was hours later before Celia lifted her head and rubbed the ache in the small of her back. A look at the clock told her that they’d been at it all morning and early afternoon.

She hadn’t found a smoking gun, but there were a few promising notes that she’d go over with fresh eyes after lunch. Just as she had the thought, her phone rang, and she almost rolled her eyes when she saw that it was Riley calling. She’d forgotten all about him and lunch. Since the man is a pest, she had no doubt he was calling to nag her about eating.

“Detective Sparks.”

“Hi beautiful, come outside.”

“What? You’re here?”

“Did you forget our lunch date?”

“I have a lot of work…”

“Are you coming out, or am I coming in?” What a pain in the ass. She thought it but didn’t utter the words out loud, not wanting to start a war with him.

She hung up the phone to find Officer Bailey, watching her with a smirk on his face. She guessed the cat was pretty much out of the bag now, something she was trying to avoid at least until a little more time had passed, but from the look on Pete’s face, she knew that was just wishful thinking.

“I’m heading out to lunch.” She grabbed her jacket from the back of her chair and hoped he didn’t ask her any questions. She had no idea where she was going, but knowing Riley’s stink attitude, he’d probably have a picnic in the town square. The man has no chill whatsoever.

He was leaned up against his truck, looking like hot sin when she walked out and the look he gave her all but melted her beneath the afternoon sun. That was nothing compared to the kiss he laid on her after dragging her around to the passenger side before letting her in. “I’m not sure if to feed you or fuck you.” Celia thought it wise to keep her lips sealed, but she was pretty sure when the moan slipped past her teeth that they both knew which one she preferred.

CHAPTER 21

Riley had all plans of feeding her honest. It’s the reason he’d left the farm and headed into town. But once they got on the road, he was reminded that it had been hours since he’d had her, and that just seemed like an affront to his senses, so he changed his mind and headed back towards the farm.

Celia didn’t say a word when he headed back out of town and again when instead of heading up to the house, he pulled off the driveway into a little copse of trees and killed the engine. Her pulse raced in her veins as soon as he reached for his seat belt before tackling hers.

Riley looked back at the backseat and decided that it looked way more comfortable than taking her in the passenger seat of his truck. He didn’t question the wild need that rose up inside him for her; he’d noticed since the other night when he took her the first time that with her things were way different than they had been with his now-dead wife.

Maybe it’s because he’d known Valerie as a younger man, maybe it’s the fact that they’d been married for a while, he wasn’t sure, what he did know is that with Celia, his heart raced just with the thought of her, and his dick stayed hard around her. “Let’s go.” He’d walked around to open her door and let her out, now taking her hand in his he opened the backdoor and helped her in before following after her.

Celia couldn’t believe she was going along with this. Not even as a teen did she allow herself to be this lax and carefree. Having sex in the backseat of a car was something you saw in the movies or read about in books, it certainly wasn’t something the straitlaced detective would’ve ever imagined being part of her life. But as with everything else since she’d taken up with Riley, she knew there was no point in arguing.

“Damn, you might have to start wearing dresses to work, how did these pants get so tight?” Riley wrestled with the zipper of her slacks, palming her heat as soon as he got it open. Just the feel of his fingers through the cotton of her panties had her body secreting its natural juices in preparation to take him.

Riley smelled her heat, and it only made him more ravenous to have her. Celia decided to help him remove her clothes before she ended up in the embarrassing position of having to explain why she’d had to change them after lunch. Riley, in this midst of a fiery need, tore her slacks off down her thighs, leaving them hanging off of one of her ankles before ripping her panties off of her.
