“Hey.” I walked right up to her, stopping at a comfortable friendly distance, not pushing my luck.

“It’s nice to see you,” she said, turning back to the track.

I figured we were walking now, not making out, so I fell into step. “Thanks. How was your day off?”

“It was good,” she replied. “I finished the book I was reading.”

“What book?”

“It’s a silly romance.”

“Oh.” I nodded. I didn’t know anything about romance novels, except that the covers featured ridiculous wind-swept scenes with pirates and heiresses. “Isn’t there sex in those books?”

“In the good ones, yes,” she said with a smile.

I got lost in that smile. When I realized I was staring, I scrambled for a more innocent topic. “I had breakfast with my landlady.”

“Oh, how was that?”

“Fine. She’s a good cook.”

“About Thursday night…” Aly began.

“I’m sorry,” I cut in with a knee-jerk reaction.

She paused in her stride. “Sorry for what?”

“You didn’t want things to go that far,” I guessed.

“No.” She shook her head. “I mean, yes. I just wanted to get your phone number. I figured after Thursday that I might want to be able to text you.”

I grinned. All along, I had been worried that I was moving too fast for her, and there she was, trying to find a way to tactfully take the relationship further. I rattled off my phone number and waited while she typed it in.

“I’m sending you a text,” she said, pushing buttons.

I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket.

“Aren’t you going to see what I said?” she asked.

“Do I want to?” I looked down at her, wishing I could take her into my arms.

“I don’t know.”

I pulled out my phone and checked it. “U up?” I laughed, typing in my response.

She looked at her screen and bit her lip. “I didn’t come here looking for you.”

I doubted that very much. “I came here looking for you.”

“Really?” She dared to hope, looking up into my eyes with a vulnerability I had never seen before.

“Let’s go back to my place.”

“Okay,” she agreed.

We turned back from the walking path, heading toward the parking lot. Neither of us spoke. It was a silent game to see how composed we could be when the evening’s activities had taken a turn toward the erotic. I imagined her falling into my bed, her hair fanned out across my pillow, her arms open.

I wanted to run. I wanted to push her up against a tree and have my way with her right then. As soon as we got to the car, I wanted to pull her onto my lap again, to continue what we had started on Thursday. I didn’t know what was running through her mind, but I could see her hands shake as she pushed the key into the ignition.

We held our breath, not daring to speak. She maneuvered backward out of the parking space, down Main Street, and toward my place. I gave directions in a trembling voice, one that I wished I could keep from betraying my need. It didn’t work, and the closer we got to Mrs. Washington’s house, the harder it was to control.

I was ready to tear my clothes off and fuck her on the sidewalk. It would be painful, but it would relieve the tension that was building to unbearable heights. She understood the urgency, parking swiftly on the curb and lunging out of the car. I followed eagerly, breaking into a laugh as we raced behind the house.

ALY

Istood behind Lincoln, running my hands across his hips as he fumbled with the door key. This was what I had been waiting for. This was what I had been dreaming about during my intimate sessions with pseudo-Karl. I had a real live man beside me, his torso hot and rock hard. I pressed my chest against his back, feeling the satisfying curve of his ass press into my stomach.

He got the door open, turned around, and, in one swift move, dragged me inside. We didn’t make it any farther than the entryway. He slammed the door shut and pressed me up against it. I felt his kiss like liquid fire, burning a swath from my lips to my core.

The decorative framing of the door bit into the back of my skull, but I ignored it. I ran my hands across his skull, the new growth of hair tickling my palms. He slid his hands across my waist, threading fingers through my belt loops and hauling me against him. I wrapped my legs around his waist, feeling the satisfaction as he caught me.

Now my crotch was against his, and the rising package between his legs hit me in just the right spot. He pulled me away from the door, taking two steps before toppling onto the couch. The itch of old fabric clawed against my back where my shirt had come up. Then Linc was on top of me, and all I could think about was him.
