“What about the baby?” I asked.
“We’re here,” he announced. “She’s fine. Are you ready?”
“Ready for what?”
He pulled the blindfold off in a flourish, allowing me to see our destination for the first time. I was standing in front of the old hair salon. I had wondered if that’s where we were; the landscape was so familiar. I had spent so many years coming and going from this exact spot. Instead of “Katrina’s Hair,” the sign now read “Wooden Rose Salon.” A graphic of a wooden rose, the same as the bouquet Jason had just given me, was cradled in a circle on the storefront window.
“I bought it,” Jason said, taking my hand and leading me toward the door. “I’ve been saving money to buy a shed for the backyard, but this was a much better purchase, don’t you think?”
“I don’t believe it,” I said.
“It’s all yours.” He grinned. “I’ve already filed the paperwork. You can hire all your old friends back and open tomorrow.”
I didn’t know what to say. All my excitement came out in a shriek as I launched myself at him and wrapped him up in my arms. This was perfect! The only thing missing from my life was a chance to earn a living, to participate in the working world the way I had since I was sixteen. As much as I enjoyed being home with Mary Ellen, the new salon would give me a chance to reconnect with my customers. I could make the place into a welcome retreat for all the women in town, a place to connect and feel good about themselves. It was a dream come true, and I had Jason to thank for it. I pulled him into my arms for a long, slow, deep kiss. My life had never felt more perfect.
