He wrapped his hand around it in a firm grip and began to pump. He reached his other hand underneath my shirt and began massaging my breast. I worked to slip my panties off and tossed them to the side before taking my fingers to my clit and circling them over the tender flesh.

Dax jerked off faster as his eyes stayed fixed to the sight of me pleasuring myself. We couldn’t get enough of watching each other.

“That’s so fucking hot,” he rasped. “I need to taste you again.”

He lowered himself between my legs and began devouring me. God, yes. Thank you. Even though I could no longer see straight, I felt his arm moving and knew he was still jerking off. The thought of that, combined with the incredible feeling of his tongue fucking me, was definitely too much to bear. Threading my fingers through his hair, I came hard against his mouth, letting out a shriek of pleasure that echoed through his bedroom.

Almost immediately after, a loud groan escaped him, vibrating against my clit. That’s when I felt the rush of wet heat—his load coating my lower leg. With his mouth still between my thighs, I could feel his panting gradually ease. He stayed in that position for a while as I massaged his scalp.

“Don’t move,” he finally said. “I’ll get something to clean this.”

Cold air replaced his warmth as he slipped out of bed and returned with a washcloth and towel.

I leaned up to watch him cleaning the cum off of my calf.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“Sorry for what? I loved it.”

He left to discard the towels before returning to the spot across from me.

“Do you feel more relaxed?” I smiled.

“I didn’t expect to take it that far. But you want to know the truth?”

I threaded my fingers through his hair. “Yeah.”

“I normally do calm down after I come. But with you…I only want more. Like I’m ready for more right this second, which is scary as shit to me. It’s like I can’t be fucking tamed.”

I can only imagine how good the sex would be. I knew he would cave if I kept taunting him. That was my gut feeling. But my gut also told me to stop. I needed to protect my heart, and the last thing he needed was more guilt. So rather than pushing the envelope even further, I decided—for once—to do the right thing.

“I think you wore me out,” I lied. “Let’s sleep, okay?”

He nodded, not looking tired in the least. I turned around, facing my back to him, and he wrapped his arms around me. So tightly. Now it seemed the joke was on me. Lying here in his arms was more powerful than sex could ever be. Here in this intimate place, all of the feelings I’d ever had for him rose to the surface. I felt safe. I felt protected. I felt loved, even if he didn’t exactly love me.

Dax didn’t realize that all he had to do was whisper in my ear to stay in Boston, and I’d never leave.

Dax

The weeks leading up to Wren’s departure went by extraordinarily fast. It was hard to believe it was now mid-May and she’d be leaving in only a couple of weeks. Based on our interactions since the sleepover, you’d never know that had happened. We hadn’t been alone together since, and that was the way things needed to be. We’d enjoyed that evening together as if it were our last night on Earth; I’d never forget it. But the priority right now needed to be Rafe.

Over the past couple of months, he had continued to improve. Once his therapist became aware of the reason for Rafe’s mutism, she’d been able to get through to him in a way she hadn’t before. With the new cognitive-behavioral-therapy approach, he was now back to talking almost normally. He still might not initiate many conversations, but he’d been able to fully participate at school, and was no longer intentionally staying silent when spoken to.

Wren had been coming over regularly to visit Rafe, making the most of the time before she had to leave. My one job, when I happened to be around during her visits, was to continue to pretend her moving to France wasn’t killing me inside. Despite the fact that we’d been keeping our distance, she remained constantly on my mind.

Today, in particular, two weeks before she was set to leave, was a huge day for all of us. Wren would be coming over to tell Rafe the truth—who she really was. We’d chosen a Saturday afternoon for the big talk, and although Shannon didn’t normally work weekends, she’d come over to offer her support. The talk wouldn’t fall exclusively on Wren’s shoulders. It would be a team effort.

We had a few minutes before Wren was set to arrive, and Rafe was upstairs in his room with no idea of what was about to hit him. Shannon brewed some coffee while I sat in a kitchen chair, bouncing my legs. I was a ball of nerves, unsure of how this was going to play out.
