Living with the family I’ve come to love is different to the one I grew up with. It was only ever my mother and me, and at the time, it was enough. Since I started my own practice in the city, I see patients four times a week, and the other days, I help at the club. I can’t stay away, but I don’t tell anyone I go there in the hopes that Callia returns. I know there’s no way it will happen unless she somehow escapes from Patrick’s clutches, but I still hold out hope. The lights and energy of O’Hagans is a welcome distraction from the fear that my best friend is gone, that she could be dead, and we just don’t know.

It’s been weeks since that night, and I don’t know how to focus on anything other than the search for her, which continues daily. Even though there are jobs the guys are busy with, I know Tye is completely focused on the search. Since he’s able to get into any computer system, he’s been tracking both Scotland Yard and MI5 activity, and he just recently hacked into the FBI database. But there’s no sign of Callia or Patrick.

The sound of kids running around in the garden drags my thoughts away from her and the worry to the news I have for Monster. He doesn’t know I’ve taken a test, and soon enough, I’ll tell him he’s going to be a father. It’s something we’ve spoken about, but we didn’t ever think it would happen so soon. Granted, we were being risky a few weeks ago, so the fact that I was late, and the test came back positive is no surprise to me.

But I know he’s going to want to put a ring on my finger. And that’s what’s held me back from telling him. I didn’t want him to feel as if he has to marry me. I know Cathal, though. He wants to do everything by the book. Part of it is how he was raised. His mother taught him to respect all women and to care for and nurture the woman he’s with. And he does that in abundance.

“What are ye doing out here?” Rebel asks as he saunters up to the doorway.

Even though the kids we’re watching for the day are out in the garden, it’s cold. The temperature has dropped considerably over the past few days.

“Figured I’d get some fresh air,” I tell him. When I first arrived, Rebel wasn’t overly friendly. He greeted me, but I could tell he didn’t trust me. To be fair to him, he was right. There were things I was hiding. “How are you doing?”

“Aye, I’m grand.” His dark hair is wet from the drizzle, while his green eyes seem to shimmer when he smiles. They’re like endless pools as they lock on mine. “I know I wasn’t ye biggest fan when ye arrived,” he tells me. “But you’re good fer him.”

“Thank you, Rebel.” I don’t know his real name, but using his road name seems to go down well. In fact, all the men prefer their road names. I can understand why. It’s never easy to have to recall where you’ve come from if your past is littered with darkness.

“Just don’t ye hurt him,” he warns me. “Or you’ll have all of us feckers to deal with.”

He chuckles as he grips my shoulder and offers it a gently squeeze. And then he leaves me to my thoughts. The evening’s festivities are going to go on all night, and I’m tired already. As we draw nearer to Christmas, which is in a couple of weeks, I’m looking forward to exchanging gifts and helping with cooking dinner.

The clubhouse is lit up with fairy lights and adorned with decorations, and there are two enormous trees in two corners of the living room. When you have a family as big as this, you must make sure there’s enough space for all the presents.

“Miren,” Sully calls to me from the hallway, and I follow to find him in the reception room. It’s furnished with three large sofas and a heavy wooden coffee table. The Christmas tree takes up most of the room, and I’m pretty sure there are animals living in the branches they’re so big. “What’s happening? Have ye told him yet?” He’s the only one I told about the baby. With Callia gone, I needed a friend. Lia’s absence has been difficult to take. I miss her daily, but Patrick has gone deep into hiding with her. The fear she’s dead is always on my mind, but as I try to stay positive, I have found myself talking to Sully every day. He has become one of my confidantes in the clubhouse.
