“Because I hate people.”

Her long, black ponytail swishes as she turns around to face me. “I’m not going to have sex with you,” she states, and her cheeks redden. “If that’s why you did it.” Her arms cross over her chest, pushing her tits up.

“You couldn’t handle how I would fuck you anyway,” I retort.

She licks her lips and turns, then leans back on the glass.

“I’m worried with what you just did, I’m going to be labeled a liar.” She lifts her hand, places her fingertips in her mouth and starts chewing. “I can’t lose this job. It’s all I’m good at.” Her dark eyes find mine. “How could you do that?”

“I was helping you,” I repeat.

She shakes her head. “No, you weren’t, and now I have to tell my boss the truth. I absolutely will not get that job now.”

“Your friend is lying about her engagement,” I point out.

Her nose scrunches.

“She is not my friend, and I don’t lie.”

“Well, it seems you better fucking learn.” I move to the minibar and pour myself a drink. She approaches me, and before I can lift the glass to my lips, she takes it and drinks it all in one go.

“I needed that for what I’m about to say.” She wipes her lips and places the glass back down. I refill it, as I know she’s building up the courage to talk, her hand starts moving and she keeps brushing her hair behind her ear. I sit there and watch her waiting for her to talk. “One month. I’ll get a ring, and I can say you are my husband. After a month, and once I’ve secured the promotion, we can split up, ” she spits out her hands now clenched as she speaks. “You may have to show yourself one other time. You know, as proof.” She huffs, loudly, as if that was the hardest thing for her to do.

“Proof?” I ask. “Was that show we just put on not enough proof?”

“No.”

I lift my glass and take a sip. Placing it back down, I contemplate my next move.

“You’ll have to stay here tonight, in my bed.” Her eyes go wide like she can’t believe what I just said.

She shakes her head. “No, no…”

“Yes. They are all at your hotel. You want them to believe you’re with me, right?”

“I have a room, I can get a room here and pay—”

“You don’t have the money.” She turns her head away, but I catch her chin between my fingers and turn her so those fuck-me eyes are on me. “You’ll wish you never met me. You may be hoping that this month will fly by, but it won’t. You realize that, don’t you?” Her mouth opens slightly, and I contemplate kissing her, sliding my tongue between those lips. “I’ll be your darkest fucking nightmare, the one that will haunt all your dreams.” Before I can think better of it, I lean forward and touch my lips to hers to taste her. She sucks in a breath as my tongue darts out and licks her lips. Just one taste. Her eyes flutter closed, and when I pull back and drop my hold on her, I throw the key onto the floor of the room.

“Get your shit and come back. I have work to do,” I say as I walk out. The last thing I should do right now is stay within touching distance of her. She wants it, as much as I know my hard as fuck cock does right now.

I should stay away.

For her sanity at the very least.

“She doesn’t live here anymore,” a small woman says as she stands before me, chewing gum. She lifts her arm and scratches near the inside of her elbow where track marks are evident.

“Where can I find her?” Her head lolls to the side as she looks me up and down.

“She owe you money?”

“No.”

“So why you want to know where she is?” she questions, chewing on her gum.

“Tell me where she is.”

She holds up her hands. “Damn, man, it’s not that deep. She’s at work. She’s a stripper.” The woman winks and gives me the club's name before she steps back and shuts the door. I do a quick internet search for the club, which is literally in the same building as they live in. When I get to the bottom of the stairs, it isn’t hard to find. The bouncer doesn’t ask me anything as he holds the door open for me.

I’ve met her once, at one of Pops’s parties. And as I scan the stage, I spot her straight away. Jessica still looks the same, maybe a touch older now. I take a seat toward the back of the room. She walks off stage, dressed in only a pair of boots, and makes her way around the tables to collect money. When she notices me, she does a doubletake, and I watch as the recognition hits her hard. She pauses, her fake smile dropping and her hands starting to shake.
