“It’s wrong.”

“What we do is wrong,” he points out. “You stomp on people’s heads to kill them, but not before you kiss them. Is that somehow, right?”

“You’re missing the point. We don’t kill kids. Even we have our limits,” I remind him.

He shrugs. “And for all you know, this is fake.”

“You just said you saw her with him. Plus, there are pictures,” I argue. “You should be on my side, not his.” Fucking hell, I want to tear my hair out right now with this conversation. How is he riding so fucking hard for Pop’s right now.

“I am.”

“Why did that not sound convincing?” I ask as Nancy walks in with our food, ending our conversation.

Not long after that, Kalilah walks in slowly and sits between us at the table. Nancy returns and places Kalilah’s plate down and smiles before she goes back to the kitchen.

“Did you request pancakes again?” I ask Kalilah.

“Yep. Chocolate chip today,” she chirps.

“You could use the extra weight,” Kenzo grumbles.

“Thanks. I thought the same, but money has been tight, so food is limited.”

She takes a bite and turns to me. “Steak and veggies. Is that all you ever eat?” She then glances at Kenzo’s plate to see he has the same.

“It’s good for you…nutritious,” I reply, cutting into mine as Kenzo does the same.

“And it’s damn well mooing. Eww… That’s gross.” She shivers in disgust.

“Mooing?” I ask, confused.

“Yes. It has blood oozing…” She shudders again. “That’s just wrong on all levels.”

“Blood’s never bothered us,” Kenzo adds, putting a slide of the steak in his mouth.

“You’re both disgusting.” She takes another bite of her massive stack of pancakes.

“I can show you something you would appreciate,” I tease her. I look down at my lap and back at her.

She tilts her head and scrunches her nose. “Hmm… Even if I wasn’t sore, I’ve already seen your twin, so I’d have to politely decline. And I’m sure you can pay someone to help with that issue.” She waves a fork around in my direction before she digs back into her pancakes, and we watch as she sits there eating more than I would think someone her size could consume.

“I don’t have to pay for sex,” I manage to say, while those eyes find mine and she swallows her mouthful before she speaks again.

“So do you go and fuck your bitch of an ex instead?”

“She is a bitch, isn’t she?” Kenzo agrees.

Kalilah turns to him. “Abso-fucking-lutely,” she says, then adds, “And she obviously still wants your brother.”

“She doesn’t,” I argue.

“She was willing to fuck you knowing full well her new husband was there.” She takes another bite of her pancakes.

“You are really getting on my fucking nerves.”

“Yeah, yeah.” She stands and pushes her now empty plate to the middle of the table. “I have work tomorrow, and I’m taking your car.” She spins and walks off, her ass swaying as she goes, and once she’s out of sight, I turn to my brother, who’s smirking.

“She’s different from your usual type,” he says.

“Yeah, I’m still contemplating what river I should throw her into next,” I mumble.

Kenzo laughs before we sit in silence, eating the rest of our food. He doesn’t ask any more about Pops, but his phone rings with a call from him, which he leaves unanswered.

Since I started my job a week and a bit ago, everyone I work with has been nice, and they are more than happy to teach and show me around. It helps that I look like one of them, not a homeless delinquent. I mean, I have a roof over my head, even though it was forced upon me. I guess that’s better than the alternative, right?

I’ve barely seen Kyson since that night with his brother. He left his keys with Nancy and said the car was mine to use. I’m extremely grateful. Not only is his car flashy to drive, but it’s also extremely comfortable. The BMW has a ton of power, which makes me feel invincible—even if it’s only an illusion. I’ve never driven something like this before, and the sense of pleasure and luxury is beyond measure. I can only dream of owning something this incredibly desirable.

Pulling into the driveway, I find Kyson sitting out front, his hands on his head as he looks down, lost in thought. I turn off the car and step out and walk slowly over to him.

“I feel like it’s been forever since I’ve seen you,” I comment, taking the seat next to him. His head lifts, and his eyes meet mine. I can see pain in their dark depths. How can a man as beautiful as him have any pain? That baffles me. “Work has been going well. I get my first paycheck next week.” He says nothing, so I raise my face to the night sky, but I know his stare is penetrating me.
