For the first time in a long time, I’m looking forward to something.

My new boss, Jack Jameson, is really something. He’s as big as a mountain and rugged enough to break all the pretty boys at my bar into a million pieces. If his size wasn’t enough to make a statement, he’s also incredibly handsome. His strong jawline, high cheekbones, plump lips, and hazel eyes made me do a double-take when we met.

When our skins touched, liquid heat plunged down my body and settled low in my belly.

Macy seems like a great kid, and I know I’m going to enjoy watching her. Still, I hate to admit it but I seem to be more excited to see Jack again—more than anything else.

I reach out my hand to ring the doorbell, but before I can press the button, another large, bearded man in a black suit opens the door. I step back on instinct.

“You the nanny?” he asks without making eye contact with me.

“Yes, I’m Jessie,” I reply, trying so hard not to get intimidated.

“Inside, please.” He taps his foot, signaling his desire for me to get the hell out of the doorway.

“Sorry,” I mutter and slip by the large man, expecting to see Jack waiting for me, but he isn’t anywhere to be seen.

How will I know what to do with Macy? Shouldn’t she have a schedule for us to follow? Thinking that Jack might be waiting for me in the playroom, I move toward the stairs. As I pass, Jack’s office door opens and he steps out in front of me.

He pins me with a look that makes my whole body flush with need. He’s wearing a crisp, white shirt, and he’s loosening the buttons on each cuff before sliding the fabric up to reveal his deliciously strong forearms. Oh god. It’s so effortlessly sexy that my thighs clamp together.

I can’t prevent the huge smile that appears on my face when I see him, but it’s very short-lived. As I struggle to come up with a sensible greeting, he frowns at me and I see something brewing in his eyes. Is it anger? Have I done something wrong already?

“Where are your bags, Jessie? Did you bring your things?”

“My bags? What things?” I think back to everything we talked about yesterday but come up blank.

Oh no, did I misunderstand? Did I miss something?

I run a hand through my hair and bite my bottom lip. “I didn’t realize this was a live-in position.”

He raises an eyebrow, something like amusement crossing his ruggedly handsome features. “Well, it is now. I’ll want Macy to have round-the-clock care.”

“Seven days a week?”

“Well, no. I suppose you can have a day or two off every week, but when you’re working, you’ll be expected to have dinner with me and Macy.”

That’s not so bad, but… “I understand, but I have a second job. Like I said earlier, I didn’t realize this was a live-in position.”

He just shrugs his massive shoulders. “Then quit it.”

“But…”

“But what? You’ll be paid well for your services. You’ll live rent-free. I’ll provide you with everything you’ll ever need. You’ll never go hungry or find yourself wanting under my roof. In return, I expect you not to have any job or commitment other than this.”

I’m running through the options in my head but ultimately realize that this might be the best opportunity I’ve ever had in my entire life. I’d be a fool to pass this up. “Okay, I can do that.”

“Good. Why don’t you go collect your things? Do you need help?”

“No, I don’t have that much.”

“Alright, then. Hurry back. Macy will be waking up soon.”

He starts to walk back into his office, but I stop him with a hand on his arm. He stiffens, and for a moment, I wonder if I’ve crossed a line. I’m still just his employee after all.

Before whatever courage I have deserts me, I blurt out, “Sir, are you angry with me?”

He turns around slowly, eyes searching my face. His forehead creases, eyes darkening. I should be afraid, right? This man has danger oozing out of his pores. Strangely, though, I don’t feel even a small amount of fear. The way he’s staring at me right now? Something clenches in the junction between my thighs, making me wet.

“It’s Jack, and no, I’m not angry with you. Now, hurry.”

I rush back to my apartment and shuffle through the pile of mail on the table, the sound of rustling paper almost too loud in my small, quiet space. Beneath it, I find the information the service provided to me about the job. I scan it until I find the box that says, “Live-in” and, exactly as I remember, it isn’t checked.

Huh. This isn’t supposed to be a live-in position. Did he change his mind or simply forget to check the box? I suppose it doesn’t matter now. I’ve already agreed to move in. I don’t want to admit it to myself, but something about sleeping a few doors away from Jack has me practically vibrating with anticipation. For what, I have no idea.
