“You don’t need to be sorry. Mac has his own way of handling the diner. I know there were many times he wanted to cut and run. To leave Vale Valley. It might be in your best interest to find another job.” Mary put a hand on her arm. “Would you like to come inside? We’ve got something baking. I don’t know exactly what we have baking, but it’s available.”

“Thanks, but I’m going to have to, you know, get back.” The diner was once again closed.

Marry pulled her in for a hug. “Don’t be a stranger.”

Luna made her escape, rushing to her car. What was with everyone? Especially the entire fucking Trojans MC.

Shaking her head, she turned over her ignition and pulled out of Duke’s driveway. It was more of a parking lot.

Her next destination was a couple of hours out of Vale Valley.

After her meeting with Duke last night, she had made the call to an old friend. His name was Harris, and while they’d been studying, he had let it drop a few times that he could get his hands on some dope.

She had a horrible feeling this was some fucked-up test by Duke. Either way, the Trojans MC’s Prez had asked her this personally, and she wasn’t going to fuck that up.

Not for Matthew.

Luna had a hunch that his loose tongue would possibly get him in trouble, but she wasn’t going to allow him to get punished for trusting her.

You care about him.

You love him.

You don’t want to see him hurt.

“Shut up,” she told herself.

Matthew was freaking Matthew. No, she didn’t want to see him hurt or worse. His dream was to become a fully fledged Trojans MC member, and she wasn’t going to allow anyone or anything to come between his dream.

She gripped the steering wheel and drove to the location where Harris had told her to meet him.

This wasn’t fun, nor was it exciting. Her hands shook as she pulled into the secluded place. No one was around. She kept her car running but pulled on the hand brake.

Every fiber of her being screamed at her not to get involved. She knew it was stupid, but still, she sat there, waiting. She could tell Duke to fuck off, tell all of the Trojans MC to piss off, but she didn’t want to do that. This was Matthew’s family.

She closed her eyes, and as she did, she heard the sound of another car pulling into the spot beside her. He was close. Too close for her to get out of the car.

As she wound down her window, he did the same.

“Luna.”

“Harris.”

“It has been a long time,” he said.

“Yeah, a lot of crazy stuff has happened.” From what she could tell, he wore a very expensive suit.

“What can I get you?” he asked.

“I have a friend, and this is really important, but he needs, something.” She stared at him, hoping he’d get the hint.

He shook his head. “Shit, Luna, you do not want to be playing with that shit. I’m out of the game. I’ve been out of it for a long time, and for good reason. Nothing good happens when you deal with that fucked-up mess.”

“It’s not for me.”

“You shouldn’t be getting it for anyone. I could go to the cops.”

“Don’t,” she said. “You can’t go to the cops.”

“I wouldn’t go to the freaking cops. I know you, Luna. If you need some shit like that, then it has to be really important.” He ran a hand down his face. “I can’t. I’m sorry.”

Luna didn’t know anyone else who could help her. “If you can’t help me … get some, then maybe you could, I don’t know, give me your supplier’s number?” she asked. This was a long shot. So freaking long.

With each second she spent here, the higher her nerves got. She had never taken drugs, never experimented with them.

Harris rested his head back in his car and groaned. “Shit. Fuck. Fine.” He pulled out a piece of paper and wrote the number on it, then handed it to her. “This is who you call. All you do is ask for product. Don’t make conversation. Don’t do any kind of bad shit. Do not take whatever they give you, Luna. Promise me.”

“Harris, what’s going on?” she asked.

“That stuff, it, er, I was in the hospital for some time. The high was great, but, I, for a few minutes, I died, okay? It was that freaking bad. I died, and I know I don’t want to go through that again. When I woke up, I got my act together. Got clean. I’m doing all the steps, which I’m breaking now.”

“This doesn’t take your steps away. I have a friend who wants to put a stop to it. I promise.” She couldn’t mention Duke’s name or the club. The last thing she wanted to do was get herself or Matthew in any kind of trouble.
