“When did you get up?” I ask awkwardly, trying not to get caught staring at her and making her think I’m a weirdo.

“A while ago,” she says. “I didn’t want to wake you.”

“Not going to lie,” I start to say and then stop nervously. “When I opened my eyes and found the bed empty, I sort of had a slight panic attack thinking you took off on me.” I take a gulp of the hot coffee, hoping that it burns my throat, and I stop talking.

She laughs. “Nope, I only run away when I’m wearing a wedding dress.” I can’t help but chuckle at her joke.

“What were you thinking about?” I ask, turning to see that she is looking at a tree with a bird in it.

“Everything,” she says. “And nothing.”

“Regrets?” I finally say, and her head whips to look at me. “Do you regret last night?”

“Should I?” she hisses, her teeth clenched together.

“I was just making sure that you know.” My voice trails off as I think for the right words. “Yesterday was a roller coaster of emotions, and today, the day after your wedding, you wake up naked, not next to the person you probably thought you would be next to, so I was just wondering.”

“Definitely didn’t think I’d wake up with you this morning.” She laughs. “If I’m honest.”

The burning starts in my stomach, and I try to convince myself that it's from the hot coffee that I just drank, but it’s not. It’s from the thought that she could have been married this morning. “What’s that look about?” she questions, and I look back at her.

“Do you remember the first day we met?” I ask, and she just smiles.

“No,” she lies, but I can tell from the way her eyes light up that she does. “Oh, wait.” She puts her finger to her nose and pretends to think about it. “It was at a party.” I bring the cup of coffee to my mouth. “You pretended you liked me and then dated my best friend.”

I shake my head. “I didn’t pretend I liked you.” I side-eye her. “Besides, I wasn’t the one who stopped talking to the other person.”

She gasps. “I didn’t stop talking to you.”

“Really?” I put my coffee cup down. We never really spoke about what happened in college, not even when we were friends again after she stopped hating me. “We were friends.” I hold up my finger when she looks like she is about to say something. “I used to come over early just to talk to you.”

“But,” she says, and I shake my head, and she just glares.

“Then one day, you just stopped talking to me.” I shrug. “So you were the one who hated me.”

“Are you done yet?” she asks, and I know that she’s ready to argue because she puts her cup down beside her. “Okay, one, I thought we had a connection.” She points at me and then her. “And then I walk out, and you are all tongue down my best friend’s throat.”

“She stuck her tongue down my throat the minute you left to go to the bathroom,” I admit to her. “So I figured that she knew something I didn’t know.” She glares at me, and I smile and lean in to kiss her lips softly. “Sorry, go on,” I say, but the need to touch her is greater than getting this story straight, at least for the next thirty minutes. “Wait.” I hold up my hand before placing it on her cheek and then kiss her softly. “Now you can continue.”

“I don’t know what I was saying.” She smiles and kisses me again. Her eyes are so much lighter than when I walked out, and if I did anything right this weekend, the fact that I made her smile is everything.

Chapter 20

Clarabella

“Oh, I know, when you started dating my best friend and would taunt me.” I stare at him.

“I never taunted you,” he says. “I thought you hated me.”

“What?” I respond, shocked. “How can you say that?” I watch him as he shakes his head, and his hand falls from my face. He takes the same hand and puts it around my shoulders.

“She told me so,” he says, and I look at him, shocked. That fucking bitch, is going through my head.

“Okay. One, she knew I had a crush on you. I told her.” I hold up my hand. “And two, I stopped talking to you because my crush was becoming deeper than I wanted it to, especially since you were banging my roommate.”

It’s his turn now to move away from me. “I never banged her.” He holds up his hand, and I’m shocked to say the least.

“She told me,” I mumble.

“Well, this is awkward,” he says. “One, we dated for two months, and well, it was weird.” My eyebrows press together. “She was all touchy-feely when you were there, and then it was like a switch went off when you weren’t.”
