“Fine.”

“I’m not sure your sleeping beauty is asleep any longer,” Trey says, meeting us at the gate so Case can climb up to get more on eye level with the large dark-brown mammals. They’re a lot faster than some people realize, going as fast as you would drive in a residential neighborhood.

“Hey, Amos. I’ll take the little guy,” Ryland says with his hand out for me to shake.

“Hey, Ry, sounds good.” I move away from him, slap Trey’s shoulder, and nod to my sister. I’ve got eyes on one person and one person only.

I double-time it back to the house when I see Genevieve appear on the front porch. She’s leaning on a post, a glass in her hand, and I’m pretty sure it’s an iced coffee leftover from the pot I made before coming down here. It doesn’t matter the time of day; Genevieve prefers her coffee cold, while I like mine hot enough to burn your mouth.

“Damnit,” I mutter under my breath when she takes a few steps down the porch, landing down where the ground isn’t completely even due to the gravel. That’s it. I’m concreting every fucking walkway and driveway. It’ll cost a damn fortune, but Genny falling and hurting herself, the potential of her being taken away from me over something I can prevent, that will never happen.

“Amos.” I get to her right as her drink starts to tip. My arm bands around her waist, hand going to Genny’s drink and holding it as well.

“Hey, sweetheart, take a good nap?” Her skin is flush. Whether it’s from the heat of our bed or the sun, it sure looks good on her.

“I did, except you weren’t there when I woke up,” she murmurs as I press my lips against hers.

“Had I been there when you woke up, you’d be too sore to walk, and then I wouldn’t be able to fuck you later tonight.” A shiver takes ahold of her body, and her nipples pebble against my chest. Damn, does she like the way I talk to her.

“I’m never going to be able to see everyone when you’re making promises like that, Amos.” I should say fuck it, throw her over my shoulder, and take her sweet ass back inside. Except then my sister and Trey’s family would probably bang on the door for the fuck of it.

“Come on, sweetheart. I keep you captive too much longer, Sienna is bound to give me hell.” Genevieve takes her drink out of my hand.

“She’ll give you hell no matter what.” I don’t reply. Instead, I wrap my arm around her shoulders and guide her back down the path I took. Everyone else is currently oohing and aahing over the new animals while waiting on Genny to make an appearance. Too bad I’ll be stealing her away the second I can. I’m greedy where she’s concerned, and I could give two fucks what anyone has to say about it.

EPILOGUE

GENEVIEVE

One Month Later

“I figured I’d find you in here.” I’m sitting on my stool, an easel in front of me, and I’m finishing up on a painting I’ve been working on. Two Chicks has hired someone to look over the storefront while Sienna and I get to have more creative freedom. Still, two days off from work have me itching to do something in my creative outlet. Amos came up from the barn one day, saw me sitting on the porch, and was pissed. The weather had changed. Gone is the fall and in its place is snow. I also wasn’t wearing the best clothes for sitting out in the cold, but the scenery was too pretty to miss.

Now, he’s turned one of the spare rooms into my art room. There’s nothing in the way of furniture that can’t get paint splatters on it. There’s even new flooring on top of the wood floor. I wanted to cry when he did that. My heart hurt for the beautiful flooring, though it’s a necessity. He mentioned that next summer, he’d build an art studio wherever I wanted on the property with the best views, or we could attach an addition to the house. Did I mention we also live together now? Yep, two days after our trip back from Texas, he drove me to my apartment, along with the whole Johnson family, men and women. They helped me box up my belongings, load up the furniture I wanted, and the rest we donated to a local church who has a thrift store where the proceeds go to families who have fallen on hard times. I almost took everything out of the trucks to hand over. Mrs. Johnson saw the look on my face, told me I had a heart of gold, and we can always make sure future donations go to them. Especially our time and monetary donations. Two Chicks will one hundred percent be doing that as well.
