That showoff sent his car to pick the kids up since he and I went ahead to his place hours before they were due. I couldn’t even ride my horse, yes mine, since he’d given Bella to me because as soon as I got in the saddle, my head got light and I felt like I would pass out.

I tried to tell him that it was just one of my hot flashes or something, and it would pass, but he made me get down and wouldn’t let me get back up once the feeling passed. Asshole bossy boots.

I was more nervous than I thought I would be when it came time for the kids to arrive. I must’ve used the restroom three times in ten minutes and called Sheila and Maeve each time. They kept reassuring me, but I wanted to cancel the whole thing.

I’m not sure how I would handle it if they didn’t approve because I was coming to feel like he was a part of me. I think I must have done something right somewhere that this man had just fallen into my lap just like that. Sometimes, I have nightmares about having never met him, that Kevin never cheated, and that I was still stuck in that life that I thought was so perfect but never came close.

Mind you; I will never say that to my kids or anyone else except Damon. I can’t not tell him because he has a tendency to ask that very question just when we’re in the middle of having sex, and his hand is usually somewhere around my neck.

So, of course, I always reassure him that yes, his dick is better, his tongue is better, his everything is better. Even if it weren’t true, which it certainly is, but if it wasn’t I’m not stupid enough to say otherwise. There are way too many swamps around here, and he’s a cop; he probably knows the best places to hide my dead ass.

Anyway, by the time the kids came, I was a nervous wreck. I need not have bothered, though, because the boys had stars in their eyes, and my daughter wanted all the juicy details, which I was not about to share, no matter how grown she was.

I was starting to relax when the boys talked Damon into picking up a football and showing them something or the other, and Savanna and I were sitting on the couch catching up. Once I heard the words ‘I like him, Mom,’ I started to breathe easy.

I decided I was relaxed enough to drink my first glass of wine for the evening and had Savanna pour half a bottle into one of the canisters he calls a goblet. I lifted that glass, and as soon as the smell of alcohol hit me, all I heard was Savanna screaming my name, followed by Damon screaming for me and running. What the hell?

I woke up inside, laying on the bed with everyone standing over me, looking panicked. “What happened?”

“You fainted.” Why did he sound so pissed?

“Mom, are you okay?” My kids were on one side of the bed, and Damon was on the other, sitting next to me.

“I’m fine; I think I just got a bit over-excited, that’s all.” I started to get up, but Damon pressed my shoulder back onto the mattress. “What’re you doing?”

“I’m fine, really. I’ll just have a bite of something, and I’ll be fine, I promise.”

Bless their hearts, my sons heard me say the word eat, and all three of them tried to outdo each other, running to grab me something. I didn’t want to eat on the bed, so I started to get up to go to the table in the sitting room of the master suite.

Todd was the first one through the door with a plate piled high with BBQ. The smell of the meat made my head spin, and luckily for me, Damon was right there this time when I went down.

I must be dreaming about that day when Damon pulled me over because I could hear the sirens as if they were right there. I tried waking up but couldn’t seem to find the strength to open my eyes, so I settled back into the darkness that beckoned.

The next time I woke up, it was a very different scene. I knew right away that I was in the hospital because of the scents and sounds, but I couldn’t figure out what I was doing there.

I heard voices coming from the other room, “You’re awake.” I turned my head in his direction with a smile. Damon was sitting forward in the chair with his hands clasped between his thighs.

“Jolene, when is the last time you’ve been intimate with your ex-husband?” What the hell kind of question was that?”
