Tension crackled around us as the driver’s door slowly started to open. With my gun aimed at the driver, I shouted, “Don’t even think about it, asshole.”
“Easy now.” He held his hands in the air in surrender. “I’m not packing.”
“Get out of the car!”
“All right, man. Just don’t pull that fucking trigger!”
I kept my gun aimed at his head as he stepped out of the car and closed the door behind him. “You got a name?”
“Folks call me Hud.”
“And the others?”
“Koda and Max.” The rear doors eased open, giving us a clear view of the two men in the backseat. “Your friend done killed Wells in the passenger seat.”
“Wells had it coming for trying to shoot a member of Fury.”
“What the hell is all this about? We ain’t got no riff with Fury.” I was done wasting time. I stepped towards him and placed the barrel of my gun under his chin. “You were at the Vault last night. You killed one of our boys, and I want to know why.”
“You got the wrong guys.”
“You really want to go down that road?”
“I’m just telling you like it is. You got the wrong crew.”
And with that, the dam broke. I moved my gun from his chin to his thigh and pulled the trigger. Curses were streaming from his mouth as I growled, “I’m not going to ask you again!”
His eyes widened, and his breath was ragged as he answered, “Fuck you, man. I ain’t telling you shit.”
Without saying a word, I brought my gun up to his head, and his dark eyes widened in horror when he heard the familiar click of my finger engaging the trigger. When his lifeless body dropped to the ground with a hallowed thud, one of the men in the backseat started cursing and shouting like a wild man. “What the fuck? He fucking killed him. He actually fucking killed him!”
I didn’t move.
I didn’t speak.
I just stood there staring at his body sprawled out on the ground, wishing I could kill him all over again. Everything fell eerily silent, and in that moment, I finally heard it—the faint chime of my cellphone. I ignored it at first, but when I heard it the second time, I pulled it from my back pocket and glanced down at the screen.
A cold dread settled in my gut when I saw that it was a message from Antonia.
Antonia:
Wes- I’m in trouble.
I need your help.
Please listen to your voicemail and call me back.
I was in utter shock as I stepped away from the Charger and pulled up my voicemail. I’d just started listening when Goose stepped over to me and asked, “What’s going on?”
“It’s Antonia. She’s in trouble.”
I felt like my world was falling apart as I stood there listening to someone say, “Where do you think you’re going?”
My stomach twisted into a knot when Antonia screeched, “Let me go!”
“That’s not going to happen.”
“Vittorio, stop! She has nothing to do with this!”
“She does now. I’ve given you plenty of time to come up with the money you owe me, and you failed to come through. Maybe she will give you the incentive you need to get the job done.”
“You can’t do this! I’ll get you the money! I just need some time!”
The man’s voice was deep and threatening as he told Antonia’s father, “You have forty-eight hours.”
“Dad. Don’t let him take me.”
“Pat her down and put her in the car.”
I’d heard enough. I tried calling her, and after ringing once, it went straight to voicemail. I was wasting time. I knew Antonia was in trouble, and that was all I needed to know. “I’ve got to get to her.”
“Okay.” Sensing the urgency of the situation, Goose glanced back at Ghost and said, “We need to wrap this shit up.”
“Just tell me what you wanna do, and I’ll make it happen,” Ghost reassured me.
“Let’s get the two in the back to the clubhouse,” I answered. “Grim will get them to talk.”
“And what about these two and the car?”
I glanced around and was relieved we were on a back road with no traffic. “Torch it.”
“You got it.”
Goose and I grabbed the two men and secured them in the back of the SUV while Ghost shoved Hud in the car and doused it with gasoline before setting it on fire. The flames were rolling high as we all loaded up and started back to the clubhouse. On the way, I called Dad and told him about Hud and his buddies, and without skipping a beat, I went right into telling him about the phone call I’d gotten from Antonia.
“Ah, damn. I knew there was something going on with that guy.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Her father ran into some financial trouble.”
“Yeah, I’m aware. I’m not sure why it was any concern of yours.”
“It was my business to know. Your mother was married to him, and you were involved with the daughter.”
