“Thanks, brother.”

With that, Skid started down the hall with Luna. That’s when I noticed all the chocolate on her clothes and face, and I couldn’t help but laugh. “Woah. Looks like somebody enjoyed her ice cream.”

“Yeah, she certainly did.”

Wes started over to me, and I couldn’t help but notice that he was moving a little slower than he was when he left. “How did things go today?”

“Okay. Just long.” He shook his head. “Jess was even more sadistic than usual.”

“She pushed you hard, huh?”

“Yeah, you could say that.”

“What about the tests? Did they go okay?”

“Yeah, they went really well, actually. Doctor seems to think I’ll make a full recovery.”

“Oh, Wes! That’s amazing news!” I stepped closer, and when I gave him a hug, he inhaled a quick breath. “You seem to be moving a little slow. Do you want me to grab you some Tylenol?”

“I already took some. Just a little sore. A hot shower, and I’ll be good as new.”

Before I could respond, Skid and Luna returned from the bathroom. “We got her all cleaned up. Now, maybe Jenna won’t have my ass in a sling.”

“You said ass.”

“Yeah, I guess I did.”

Luna’s eyes narrowed. “Ass is a bad word.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I’ll do better.” Skid glanced over at Wes and gave him a look. “I better get her home before I say anything else I shouldn’t.”

“Might be best.” Wes chuckled. “Appreciate you two taking me today. I owe you one.”

“Don’t mention it. I was glad to do it.” Skid gave him a pat on the arm. “Glad to see you’re doing so much better. You really had us worried.”

“Had myself worried, but things are looking up.”

“That they are.” Skid looked down at Luna with a smile. “You ready to roll?”

Luna nodded, and they were on their way.

Wes studied me for a moment, then smiled. “Damn. You’re beautiful.”

“I just straightened my hair.”

“It’s not the hair or the makeup or the nails. Yeah, I noticed them all.” He gave me a wink. “But you’re beautiful without those things. More beautiful than you realize.”

“Well, thank you.”

“No thanks necessary. Just stating facts.”

Without saying anything more, he turned and started down the hall. Before disappearing into his room, he called out, “I’m going to take a shower.”

A few minutes later, I heard the water kick on, and I used that as my sign to start dinner. It was still relatively early, so I decided to throw together one of my crockpot dinners. Once I had everything together, I went into the living room and started searching for something to watch on TV.

I was scrolling through the channels when Wes walked in, looking as irresistible as ever with his damp, tousled hair and sexy little smile. His long-sleeved t-shirt fit snug against his chest, and his sleep pants hung low, making it even harder not to gawk at him. “Whatcha doing?”

“Nothing much. Just looking for something to watch.”

“Not finding anything?”

“Not yet. So much of the same ol’ stuff.” With his eyes trained on mine, he started in my direction and when he reached me, his arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer as he began nuzzling my neck with light kisses. Goosebumps prickled my skin as he worked his way up to my ear. “What about one of those shows you’re always watching?”

“Hmmm?” I mumbled, my body melting into a pile of mush in his arms. “What show?”

“You know. The real crime, true crime freaky shit you watch.”

“Oh, yeah. They’re kind of my favorite.”

“I’ve noticed.”

He continued to trail kisses along my jaw until he reached my lips, then softly pressed his mouth against mine. The scent of his cologne. The feel of his body. It was all too much. My senses were being seduced yet again and I couldn’t think straight. When he deepened the kiss, sending my need for him to an entirely new level of insanity, I placed the palms of my hands on his chest and gave him a gentle push.

“I thought you were sore.”

“I was. Not anymore.”

As I stood there looking up at him, I had a million thoughts running through my head and it had me reeling. I wasn’t falling for him. I’d already fallen a long time ago, but my feelings for him were growing stronger by the second, and it scared me. It scared me to the point that I wasn’t sure what to do or say.

“Ah, she’s got something on her mind.”

“What?”

“You’re doing the brow thing.” He ran the tip of his finger between my brow and down the bridge of my nose. “Means you’re thinking about something. So, what’s on your mind.”

“You.”

“Oh? And what about me?”

“You’re getting better every day, and truth be known, you don’t really need me here anymore.” I shrugged. “I’m not sure that you ever really did.”

“I did, and I still do.”
