When I glower at him, he winks and then walks out of my office like everything is totally normal. I guess in a way it is, because I’m miserable without Meadow.

Deciding to meet her right when she walks off the elevator, I go and wait in the lobby and pace back and forth. As soon as the clock strikes eight, the doors open and thank god, she’s standing there looking like an absolute angel.

It’s just too bad that she’s scowling at me.

“Good morning,” I start to say before she shoves my coat in my face and doesn’t say a word.

“Morning, Heath,” I hear Nelly say.

I look up in time to see Meadow stomping toward the conference room and Nelly getting off the elevator. I guess they rode up together.

“Hey.” I toss my coat on the couch. “You can go talk to Mace. I’ll be with you shortly.”

I don’t wait around to see what Nelly does as I hurry to catch up with Meadow. She’s already at the table in the conference room and setting up her laptop when I enter.

“Listen, about last night…”

“Today I’d like to go over the files in acquisitions if you could get me that code,” Meadow says, completely ignoring me.

“I will, but first I want to apologize for real and not just with a text.” She won’t look at me as I talk so I move closer. “Meadow, I’m sorry I—”

“I’ve really got to cut out dairy,” Craig says as he enters the conference room.

“After acquisitions we can look into litigation since those are the smaller accounts.” Meadow is still talking like I haven’t spoken a word or Craig hasn’t told us once again about his morning irritable bowel syndrome.

“Give me a few minutes.” Craig grabs his stomach and heads for the bathroom.

“You know, I never took you for a cheater.” Meadow finally snaps her head up to glare at me, and I see fire in her eyes.

“What?”

“After all this time, you wait until you’ve got a girlfriend or a whatever the hell she is to kiss me and then pretend like some stupid one-word text apology is going to make it better? You know, I knew you were a pompous asshole, but I didn’t think you were stupid.”

“You thought I was pompous?” I want to laugh because I have no idea what the fuck is she talking about, but that seems like the wrong reaction with how mad she is.

“That’s not the point!” Her cheeks flush, and I can see she’s been stewing all night about whatever this is.

“Meadow, don’t take this the wrong way, but did Briar give you one of her special brownies for breakfast?”

“No.” She’s quick to answer and then thinks it over. “No, not after last time.” She shakes it off and then points her finger at my chest. “The point is, you’re a jerk. You have a girlfriend and you kissed me, and that’s not cool. I know that we like to argue and poke at each other, but that was so far across the line.”

I take a moment to really think about what happened at the bar when she stormed out and then last night in the elevator. “Wait, you think Nelly is my girlfriend?”

Her hands drop, and her anger starts to fade as I see the wheels in her mind begin to turn. “Is she not?”

“Let me ask you one question, Meadow, and I want you to be honest with me.” I move into her space and grab her hips so I can bring her closer. “If I tell you I’m single, will you shut up and let me kiss you again?”

MEADOW

“I…ah…” I can’t find words. All night I was pissed about him having a girlfriend, but now he doesn’t. Better yet, he never did. Does that change things? Before yesterday, I told myself I wouldn't go down this path again. Then one day with Heath and here I am.

“That’s not a no, and I’m not going to let you come up with a million reasons to give me one,” he says and then he’s kissing me and taking the choice away.

I should push him back, but instead I grip the front of his shirt. His hand slides into my hair, pulling my head back to deepen the kiss. My lips part the second his tongue slides along the seam, and I moan.

“Fuck, you taste so good.”

“It's a toaster strudel. The icing.” He smiles at my dumb response. Jeez, I couldn’t have just taken the compliment?

“It’s you. I jacked off last night thinking about your mouth.”

“Heath!”

“That’s right, naughty girl. Say my name.” Then he’s kissing me again, and this time the kiss is deeper.

Why is him calling me a naughty girl so damn hot? I was never naughty. I’m the antithesis of naughty, but the idea of being naughty for Heath makes my panties wet.
