“Keep telling yourself that,” I taunt, and even I don’t know quite where that’s coming from. My wolf has taken over, speaking for me and acting on my behalf. I don’t want her to rule anything with me. I don’t want this connection. That’s not what the mark was about. I had no intention of claiming her for myself. She’s nothing to me, or at least she shouldn’t be.
And I’m the one taunting her for what she believes?
Unaware of our telepathic conversation, Forrest holds up his hands and smiles at the women. “All right. Fun is fun, but let’s get real. There’s not going to be any fighting tonight.”
“I warned you,” I growl straight at him.
“Spare me the rabid wolf act,” Lili sneers, tossing her head. She’s magnificent, even when all she’s doing is being a smartass and undermining our bond. “I’m taking myself out of the equation. The rest of you can enjoy yourselves.” Still, she sneers openly at Hannah, who very clearly bristles. “You might want to be careful. This one’s been around. No telling what she might carry.”
“I should have fucking killed you years ago, you stupid bitch,” Hannah growls, but even my wolf is unimpressed. She’s all show, the typical bully. The moment there’s even the slightest bit of pushback, she folds. She’s no threat to Lili—and if she was, I would snap her neck before slicing her open and watching every last drop of blood pool at my feet. As it is, she’s not worth the effort.
“Come on,” Forrest cajoles, and once again, I see red at the intimate tone of his voice. Have the two of them…? No, that’s impossible. My wolf would be able to smell him on her. The most they’ve done is spend time together tonight. If he knows what’s good for him, that’s as far as it will go.
“I’m not interested,” she insists, her voice firm. “But you have fun.” Lili can’t resist the urge to look at me before turning away, and when she does, there’s no missing the pain in her eyes. This isn’t my wolf seeing what he wants to see. It’s clear she’s wounded and insulted. No doubt the fact of it being Hannah she witnessed sucking my cock, driving the knife in deeper.
Though my wolf is frantic to set things right and claim his mate, the rest of me is much more interested in setting her straight. After all, this is the point I wanted to make, isn’t it? She’s bound to me, but I am not bound to her. No matter what my wolf thinks in his weaker moments.
“Have a good night,” I bid, smiling. “We’ll be sure to have fun without you.”
And then she’s gone, walking away, taking even, measured steps toward the elevator. Right. I heard they were giving her a better room now that she has status in the pack. Her scent lingers in the air after the elevator doors close, making her vanish from view but not from my awareness.
“Well.” Hannah folds her arms, pouting dramatically. “Talk about a mood killer.”
I might not be able to take out my rage on my brother, but this piece of nothing? She’s another story. A growl stirs in my chest, and I take a step toward her—only to be stopped by my brother’s arm across my chest.
“Don’t be that way,” he urges with a grin I’ve seen too many times to count. He’s putting on the charm in hopes of getting his dick wet.
“Tell that to him.” She jerks a thumb at me, her lip now jutted out so far she might trip on it if she isn’t careful. “I thought we were trying to have a little fun, then he went all psycho on me.”
“These are strange times,” Forrest reminds her. “We’re all a little on edge. And let’s face it, he’s kind of a pain in the ass on a good day.” She giggles but is still trying to at least pretend to be offended.
“So long as we’re being honest…” He leaves me behind in favor of approaching her, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear and allowing his fingers to trail along her jaw. “You’d have a lot more fun with me. I promise.”
She looks me up and down before snorting. “At this rate, it would be impossible not to.” She’s lucky her opinion means less than nothing to me.
“He’s stressed. We all are. But…” He places a hand against her lower back and pulls her close, leaning in to sniff her hair. She giggles, and the sound sets my teeth on edge. How did I ever think she was worth screwing around with? “Tell me the truth. It got you hot when I walked in here and caught you choking on my brother’s dick. Didn’t it? I could smell it in the air. I can still smell it.”
