Luckily, none of that happened. The only witness to our lovemaking was Big Black, and the stallion didn’t seem to mind one bit.
I flop down on my bed and sigh dreamily. Leslie was right. There definitely were some hot farmers at the fair and I’m the lucky girl who got to meet one. Travis was a little on the preppy side to be a true farmer, but he used to show sheep in 4-H and he works for an agricultural company. That’s farmer enough for me. We exchanged phone numbers after it was all over, and a warm feeling runs through my belly. I wonder when he’ll call?
I clutch my phone against my chest like a teenage girl in the throes of infatuation. In fact, I already know when we’ll see each other again because we made plans to attend another fair a couple towns away next weekend. It’s much smaller than the Corinthian Fair, but it’ll still be a good time. I’m excited to give it a try, especially if there’s a possibility of round two with Travis. Maybe they too will have a barn with a dark spot in the back, perfect for doing the dirty.
Suddenly, I hear the front door open and the sound of voices. I jump out of bed. My parents are back from wherever they went this afternoon, and they can’t see me like this. I’m still too hot and bothered by what happened with Travis, not to mention the fact that my privates are a bit sore and sticky.
I gather my robe and toiletries and lock myself in the bathroom. Then, I turn the shower on as hot as it can get and step in, grateful for the privacy. Once again, my mind immediately wanders to Travis. His handsome face appears before me and I tingle once more. He’s so gorgeous. Up close, I was able to see that his eyes are a dark blue, almost black in color. Plus, he has strong, bronzed features and a devastatingly sensual mouth. It was wonderful to be kissed everywhere by him.
After I finish – both my shower and myself – I return to my room. Just in time because a few minutes later, my mom knocks on the door.
“Hey, sweetheart, how was the fair?” Maryanne asks, poking her head in. Her brown hair is shellacked perfectly into a stiff bob, and her lipsticked smile is a sophisticated red.
“It was really fun,” I say. “I got some strawberry pie.”
Mom grins. “Your favorite.”
I smile. “Yeah, but they were out of whole pies today so I couldn’t bring one home. I’ll go again tomorrow before my shift and get one for you and Dad.” Of course, that just sets off my mom.
“You know, sweetie, if you worked with Dad and me, you wouldn’t have shifts to worry about. Real estate agents make their own hours for the most part, and it’s very freeing. I love it.”
I force myself not to laugh. That may be true, but my parents have worked long hours their whole lives because they couldn’t leave the office. That’s also a downside of working for yourself. You’re the boss, the secretary, and the janitor rolled into one.
My phone rings, saving me from another awkward conversation with my mother. I glance at the screen and then smile sunnily.
“It’s Leslie, I should really answer.”
Maryanne frowns a bit.
“Weren’t you just with her at the fair?”
“Yeah, but she met a guy so I know she wants to tell me about him.”
Mom clucks. “Leslie Mistral, my goodness! Always meeting men no matter where she goes! I’m glad you’re not like that, Pepper.”
I manage to smile innocently. “I know, Mom. I’ll be down later for dinner.”
“Okay. Tell Leslie I said hi.”
As soon as my mom is out of the room, I answer the phone.
“Hey, my mom says hi.”
“Hi Maryanne!” Leslie chirps cheerfully. Then, immediately after, “Oh, Pepper, I’m in love.”
I laugh. “I’ve heard that before. Tell me about him. You and that redheaded guy seemed deep in conversation when I walked away.”
Leslie gushes excitedly. “Yeah, we started talking about rabbits as you know, but it quickly morphed into a million other things. I know about his parents, his little sisters, and the small farm they run. Frank is fantastic, Pepper. You’re going to love him when you meet him next.”
“So there will definitely be a next time? Remember, I’ve known you for a long time, Les. You’re usually over guys by the second time.”
She pretends to be mad.
“I think Frank is going to be different!”
“I’ve heard that before, too.”
“I know, Peps, but I mean it. He’s different than the other guys. I didn’t jump right into bed with him. In fact, we didn’t even kiss!”
I giggle. “Wow, that is some restraint on your part.”
“I know right?” Leslie squeals. “It was hard, but I could tell Frank didn’t want to rush things. We’re getting together again during the week to hang out and it’s going to be A-W-E-S-O-M-E. I’m excited about this guy, Pep, in case I didn’t mention it before.”
