“That’s exactly what I told him to be.”
“Exactly. I think she’s reading more into it.”
Ah. Now that makes sense. “Do you think Bryn likes Knight?”
“I’m not sure, but it will hurt when she realizes he’s only doing his job.”
“She’s young. Love and happiness will come. Let’s eat dinner and then celebrate.” I lean in and kiss her lips while cupping her ass and giving it a squeeze.
“Damn, I keep walking into this mushy mess.”
“Then go back to your own home,” I growl out at my sister, who’s standing behind me.
“Well, Josh wanted to say hi.” I spin around to see my nephew smiling with his toothy grin. Fuck, they say that women get baby fever, but something in me wants to make sure Aurora’s carrying my baby even more.
“Oh, my goodness!” Aurora squeals, walking past me to pick up little Josh. The guy eagerly jumps in her arms.
Narrowing my eyes at him, I give him a very stern warning, “She’s mine, mister. Understood?” He turns and hugs Aurora tightly.
“Brat.”
“He loves women. I think it’s the breastfeeding thing.”
“Speaking of.” Aurora adjusts him as he tries to attack her tits.
“Fucking shit. I’m losing my edge. He’s going to hit on my woman right in front of me.” He’s too damn cute. I can’t wait to have a dozen boys.
“Jealous. It’s so great to see, but I need to steal Rory for a few minutes.”
“Are you staying for dinner?” I ask her.
“I might as well. Jackson is working late tonight. A double homicide.”
“How you married the cop investigating me still stuns me. Jackson’s lucky I actually like his ass.” My criminal activity has been monitored in the past; that’s a big part of why I’ve gone clean. It’s hard to keep fuckers like her husband off my ass. Granted, Aurora’s stepbrother suddenly went missing last week. I can’t say I did it or didn’t, but I wasn’t the only one looking for revenge on him. In fact, my informant tells me that they’ve pinned it on McDowell. All I know is Aurora will never have to worry about him again.
Epilogue
One Year Later
Maddox
“Happy New Year,” we three whisper to each other because little Maddox fell asleep on my chest after being fussy. We’re sitting on our balcony like we did the year before, except we have our new addition. Our boy is three months old today and so damn perfect.
I stare at my wife, reaching to pull her in for a kiss when I see a disgusted look on her face. “What’s wrong, Kitten?”
“Nothing.” Her lips are pressed tightly together, looking uncomfortable. “Excuse me,” she mutters out, dashing out of the room, and I’m on my feet, handing our son to my sister-in-law.
“Aurora, Rory, baby, are you okay?” I ask. She’s in our bathroom, throwing up. Shit.
I kneel down beside her and rub her back. “My love. We need to get you to the doctor.”
“No, I’m okay.”
“You most certainly aren’t. I should call a doctor.”
“I can handle a little bug, but I need the baby to be protected. Wait, maybe seeing a doctor will be a good idea.”
“Have you two considered you’ve knocked her up again?” Brynlee asks, walking into the bathroom.
“Um…we just had Mads, and I’m breastfeeding.”
“Yeah, but you should rule that out before you go and harass a doctor on New Year’s Day. We can always visit an urgent care if necessary, but I’m betting you’re pregnant. You two can’t keep your hands off each other, especially since you got the go-ahead.” Laughing, she adds, “I’m going to lay him down.”
“Thanks.” I turn back to Aurora, who’s trying to stand and assist her.
She smiles up at me sheepishly. “I’m better now. I hope it’s not the flu. I can’t feed the baby that way, can I?” She washes her face and hands.
“We can always switch him now, but we can call your doctor. It’s not a big deal either way. I’ll head out first thing in the morning to pick some up along with some pregnancy tests. We’ll find the closest one to breast milk.”
“Okay. Thank you. I need some air.”
I carry my lovely wife out to the balcony, wrapping her up in my arms and a small blanket over us.
“Hey, I’m going to head to bed. The baby is okay, but here’s the monitor anyway.”
“Thanks, Brynlee.”
“Happy New Year, Maddox. You’re a great man. I’m so glad my sister made the sacrifice.” She gives me a quick hug, pulling back nervously. She’s come a long way since they brought her here. Most of her discomfort around men has disappeared or eased. She’s still a little skittish, but it helps with Knight guarding her.
“Me too. Me too.” She scurries off to bed after kissing Aurora’s forehead.
Once my pretty little wife is completely asleep, I carry my treasure to bed and tuck her in. I check in on the baby one more time before climbing in beside Aurora. Life doesn’t get any better than this.
