Chloe had watched enough movies to know what the floating sensation she was experiencing meant …

She wasn’t going to get to tell Lucca she loved him one more time.

And she was never going to get to hold her babies.

At the thought of her children, Chloe began screaming for them to save her babies. Over and over, she screamed until, with a rush of air, she found herself standing on the edge of a cliff. Terrified she would fall, Chloe stood paralyzed with terror that a sudden gust of wind would send her over the edge.

An unexpected sound had her turning around to see a large dragon rushing right toward her. With the dragon charging, Chloe forgot she was standing on the edge of a cliff and fell backward, staring up at the sky above her. She was going to die twice in the same day.

Closing her eyes, she prayed the pain would be brief when she landed below, but her eyes sprung open when she felt talons grip her sides. The dragon was flying, carrying her clutched protectively in its claws.

She was helpless. All she could do was stare at the flying dragon holding her, expecting at any moment to plunge to her death or be ripped apart by the massive mouth.

Terrified with immobilizing fear, it took her a moment to understand that the dragon was whispering to her …

With each hum of its voice, the fear slowly left her body and turned into reassurance at the words of the mythical beast. Even when it released her from its talons, Chloe wasn’t afraid as she started falling again … falling back into the darkness that had carried her here.

Voices penetrated the darkness that was trying to keep her submerged.

“Chloe, darlin’ …” Lucca’s raspy voice had her fighting to lift her eyelids. “I’m not going to see our daughters until we can see them together. Melissa and Emilia are crying for their mom.”

Hearing herself being called mom had Chloe finally lifting her weighted eyelids.

My babies—

“Are they okay?”

Lucca, who was holding her hand, lowered his head to the bed at her voice. She could feel the bed shaking with his relieved sobs.

Clasping his hand tighter in hers, she stared at her exhausted husband. “Is anything wrong with our babies?”

Lucca raised his head. His eyes were so piercingly blue-green from his tears. “Our daughters are healthy, waiting to meet their mother.”

Relief flooded her as she stared at the glass walls surrounding her. “What happened?”

“Your heart …” He sobbed. After giving himself a moment to pull himself together, he was able to tell her what the doctors had said and everything she had missed while she was gone. “You have a congenital birth defect. Your heart couldn’t hold up to the strain any longer.” Tears continued to spill onto his cheeks, still unbelieving of the news. “You were taken to emergency surgery, where they repaired your heart and performed a C-section.”

The hand that held hers grasped tighter, still afraid she might leave him.

“I came so close to losing you.” His voice hoarse with emotion, he made her an oath. “Never again. No more children.”

He had lost his mother suddenly, and now he had almost lost her in the blink of an eye, and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it. The only thing he could do would mean he would never have a son.

“Oh, Lucca … there’s nothing to be afraid of.” Chloe smiled weakly at him, remembering the magnificent sight she had seen.

Any fear of the fragility of life she’d had was now gone, and even though she planned to live a long and happy life with Lucca in this lifetime, for as long as she could, Chloe had seen the truth of their afterlives …

There would be no heaven or hell, as their souls would meet again.

EPILOGUE TWO

SOMETIME IN ANOTHER UNIVERSE…

Eira stared up into the blue sky. It looked so vast from up here with nothing in the way to obstruct her view. She could almost reach up and …

Raising her hand out of the sun-warmed grass, she reached for the clouds, but alas, her arm wasn’t long enough to touch them.

With disappointment, she let her hand drop back to earth as her lids became heavy. It might not have been the smartest thing to take a nap on the edge of the cliff, but with her eyes coming to a close, it was rare for Eira to find peace …
