He ended the call and tucked his phone into his suit pocket, and when he spoke, his face was about as serious as his expression had been. “Vincent and Amo will be your security today. I expect you to remain in their eyesight at all times.”
It wasn’t instructions from her fiancé, but from the boss.
“Understand?” he asked, raising her chin with a finger when she didn’t respond.
Chloe could only manage a nod. Her breath was stuck in her throat by how dark the beautiful man before her was.
He leaned down to give her a parting kiss. It was the first time she had kissed the boogieman when he was dressed to kill…
After saying his goodbyes to Chloe, Lucca rushed to the Casino Hotel after getting a phone call about an emergency in the underground casino. When he made it to the hidden bottom floor, he went down the dark hallway and through the door that was supposed to have been guarded by one of his soldiers.
It was pitch black when he first went in, but then the lights suddenly flicked on and …
“Surprise!” everyone yelled as the place lit up.
Speechless, Lucca looked around to see all his and Dominic’s men had come to congratulate him on his promotion. He probably heard “Congrats, boss” a thousand times as he went through the sea of suits that was gambling, drinking, and beginning to have a good time.
Coming up to an ear-to-ear smiling Sal, he knew exactly who had been responsible.
“Like it?” Sal asked, proud of himself.
Lucca looked down at the cake that had the words “Surprise, Motherfucker” written in icing.
“You really shouldn’t have.”
The tapping of heels as Chloe was being scrutinized had her wishing a sink hole would appear in the ground and swallow her whole.
She hadn’t liked any of the dresses the girls had picked out to even come out of the dressing room yet, and neither had Maria or the sales associate, Ken, who beat at his red-bottom shoes, trying to decide what to put her in next.
“You know what …?” A lightbulb turned on in Ken’s head, his voice trailing off as he dashed away. He was back in mere moments with a dress in hand. “This came in just this morning. It hasn’t been pressed yet, which is why it wasn’t on the floor.”
Chloe took one look at the simple yet elegant dress and fell in love. While her flamboyant sister-in-law didn’t yet seem convinced, she still left the room to let her get changed, returning to her place in the waiting area on the couch.
Chloe walked out of the room, stepped up onto the pedestal, and nervously smoothed the white dress down over her wide hips. With it being so simple, it put her curvy figure on display, and the square neckline, while still modest, complemented her large breasts.
Her girlfriends still, in complete silence, Chloe somehow grew even more nervous when she had to ask, “Well, what do you think?”
Elle, her forever BFF, spoke for them all, “I love it.”
However, Maria must still not have been convinced when she asked Ken to get something else from the back.
Ken left again, this time not returning with a dress but a big box.
A pregnant Maria stood and opened the lid. Then she magically pulled out a beautiful white veil that seemed like it went on for miles.
Every girl’s mouth fell open in a gasp, including Chloe’s.
“I had this made for you,” Maria said, approaching her to place the beautiful veil on her head as tears began to fall from the all the girls’ eyes.
“Oh, Maria.” Chloe was in awe looking at what seemed like a million roses that trailed down it with tears brimming her own eyes. “It’s beautiful.”
Maria started sniffling. Pulling a tissue from the box Ken held out, she dared anyone to say anything, like the pregnancy was the reason for making her so emotional. When she finally looked at Chloe, she didn’t look at her like she was to be her future sister-in-law; Maria looked at her as if she were a sister …
“Mom would have loved it.”
“What are we doing here, Lucca?” Dominic asked under his breath when he came to stand beside him.
Lucca’s eyes drifted across the room, scrutinizing each person at the party. “You know exactly what.”
“We’ve been here for over two hours.”
Raising his wrist, he checked his watch to see the Luciano mob boss was right; they had been here for over two hours already. The “surprise” party was about as fake as the tits of the women who worked down here, but only a few he trusted knew.
“If he was going to show, he would have done it already,” Dom stated, sure to keep his voice low.
“Oh, he’ll show.” Lucca didn’t doubt that for a second. Like Dom’s wife, his sister had said, One-Shot was into the theatrics.
