Fallyn swings around, angling her body away from the table of hockey players.

“The heat you two just generated was almost enough to have me bursting into flames,” I say lightly, hoping she’ll open up and tell me what’s going on. “You really don’t know him?” Skepticism fills my voice.

Even in the darkness of the bar, it would be impossible to miss the dull color that crawls up her neck and cheeks. “No, I don’t.”

My lips quirk. “Do you want to?”

She shakes her head.

Hmm. Even more interesting.

Most of the girls on this campus have a thing for the guy and would jump at the chance to sleep with him. He’s the broody bad boy of the team.

From the corner of my eye, I catch a glimpse of Ford shoving his way through the crowd and decide it would be best to hightail my ass into gear.

Cutting off our convo, I point toward the exit. “It was great running into you, but I’ve got to head out.”

Disappointment crashes over her features. “Oh, okay. I’ll text you later.”

“Sounds good.” With that, I swing away, slipping through the sea of drunken students to the back of the bar. Once the cool night air hits my cheeks, relief pumps through me as I beeline toward my BMW parked in the lot.

Even though Ford and I drove over together, he’ll have to find his own way home.

Chapter Twenty-Six

Ford

“Dude, that hat trick was freaking awesome! With the number of shots you took on goal, you should have had at least three of them.”

My attention flickers to the guy who just slid in front of me, effectively blocking my path to Carina.

“And then when that player knocked you into the boards…” He shakes his head.

“Yeah,” I mutter. “It was a solid hit.”

My gaze returns to the blonde as she slips out the back door.

Dammit.

“I couldn’t believe it when you took that shot and it hit the crossbar before bouncing off it. That totally should have been a goal.”

He’s right about that.

I jerk my shoulders. “Well, what can you do?”

I’m hanging onto my patience by a thread. Every second that ticks by only makes it more unlikely that I’ll catch Carina. It’s tempting to shove this dude out of my way and make a run for the exit.

He shakes his head and shifts, looking as if he’s settling in for a nice long convo.

Before he can launch into yet another play, I clap him hard on the shoulder. “It was great talking to you…” My voice trails off as I blank on his name.

“Steve,” he supplies helpfully. “We were in the same marketing class last year.”

I snap my fingers and point, even though that’s not ringing any bells. “Right. Dr. Masterson.”

His brow furrows. “No, it was Giddings.”

“Sorry.” I flash a tight smile. One that feels as if it’ll crack into a million jagged pieces. “It’s been a long day and I was just heading out.”

“No worries.”

“Have a good night.”

That said, I slide past him, huffing out a relieved breath when he doesn’t trail after me. A few more people clap my shoulder and call out my name. Instead of engaging, I stare straight ahead, ignoring them all.

There’s only one person I have an interest in talking to.

More like getting my hands on.

Carina.

And that song?

Fucking hot.

It took less than thirty seconds of her husky crooning for my dick to give her a salute worthy of a five-star general. Unfortunately, one glance at all the dazed and slack-jawed expressions told me I wasn’t the only one blown away by her performance.

By the time I make it to the paved lot and jog to where she parked the BMW, there’s nothing but an empty space.

I plow a hand through my hair and contemplate my options before swinging around and heading back inside. It takes a solid twenty minutes to convince Wolf to hand over the keys to his Mustang GTO. The guy treats the damn thing like it’s his baby.

Ridiculous.

Sure, I love my Vette. But at the end of the day, it’s just a car. A really nice, shiny automobile that gets me from point A to point B. That’s all I need it to do.

“Let me guess…did Carina take off without you?” he asks, a smile tugging at his lips.

He’s probably thinking about the eyeful he caught in the corridor after the game.

I shoot him a glare and turn away without responding. His deep rasp of a chuckle chases after me.

Dick.

Once I slip behind the wheel and start up the engine, the muscle car purrs to life and I take off, roaring out of the parking lot. It takes less than ten minutes to reach the apartment building. I slide into a space and spot her sleek silver Beamer a few rows over. Something settles inside me that she came straight home.
